AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific fell behind early, falling to San Francisco State by a 6-3 final Saturday afternoon at the Cougar Baseball Complex.
How It Happened: San Francisco State continued their pattern this series of putting the Cougars in a hole before they ever got to the plate, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, aided by the first of what would be five Azusa Pacific errors in the contest. This time, the Cougars were able to make a comeback relatively quickly, as Spencer Rasmussen hit a two-out single to right center and Mikey Easter followed up with his second home run in as many days, tying the score after three innings.
The tie would be short-lived, however, as the Gators came right back with two in the fourth to reclaim the lead, and this time, they would hold on, even stretching the lead to three with a solo home run to lead off the 7th. The Cougars would pull one back in the bottom half of the inning. George Christison led off the inning with a pinch-hit walk, and was at third with one out when Cameron Lee drove him in on a sac fly. But the Gators got another run back and Azusa Pacific's last threatening rally in the eighth was wiped out by a double play.Â
By the Numbers: Easter had the Cougars' lone multi-hit effort in the game, while Will Medina had a double and a stolen base. Aidan Langley struck out five batters in 4.1 innings on the mound, while Alfredo Frey and Kohl Peterson each produced scoreless efforts in relief. The series split marked the first time San Francisco State had beaten Azusa Pacific, as counting the first two games of this series, the Cougars had won all 11 previous meetings between the two schools.
Up Next: Azusa Pacific (4-9) heads over to the 710 freeway on Tuesday for a one-off non-conference game against Cal State Los Angeles. First pitch from Reeder Field is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., and the game can be streamed on the CCAA Network.
