AZUSA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific celebrated its seven seniors in style, dominating Chaminade 4-0 on Thursday evening. Senior
Jaci Maze capitalized on her senior celebration, netting three goals to complete a "perfect" hat trick, which is when a player scores one goal with their right foot, one with their left, and one with their head.
How it Happened: The Cougars quickly got on the scoreboard in the first half, with
Avery Guiel opening the scoreline as she tucked away a cross sent in by junior
Alexis Fuller in the 10th minute. The goal would mark Guiel's fifth of the season, while Fuller got her first points of the season with her assist.Â
Azusa Pacific quickly doubled the lead just six minutes later, when Guiel crossed a ball into the box that Chaminade's goalkeeper bobbled before
Jaci Maze took advantage of the loose ball, sending a right-footed shot into the back of the net for her first goal of the evening. Maze scored her second goal of the night when
Aubrey Dunaway crossed in a near-perfect ball that easily found Maze's head for a powerful header to extend the lead to 3-0 in the 30th minute.
The game settled down in the second half, with no real action until the 67th minute when Maze would complete her perfect hat trick. Just four minutes after coming off the bench, junior transfer
Zoey Kuhn played a ball into the box for the fourth successful cross of the evening, where Maze awaited. She redirected it with her left foot past the Silverswords keeper to finalize the score at 4-0. In addition to scoring with both of her feet and her head, Maze's goals were consecutive, with no one scoring in between, meaning it was both a "perfect" hat trick and a "natural" hat trick.Â
The Silverswords had no answer to the Cougars, as they were held to just one shot in the remaining 23 minutes of the game, while Azusa Pacific enjoyed using a handful of players off the bench.
By the Numbers: Azusa Pacific (8-3-1) served Chaminade (5-3-4) its first conference loss of the season, and the victory marked the Cougars' 10th over the Silverswords across 12 total matchups. Azusa Pacific outshot Chaminade 11-5, with six being on frame. Ten Cougars saw minutes off the bench, including keeper
Alexia Muniz, who collected her first minutes of the season, while
Sophia Emerson and
Hailey Hilton both played all 90 minutes of the match.
Senior Night Celebration: Before kickoff, seven graduating players were honored as they took the pitch at the Cougar Soccer Complex for the second-to-last time.
Maddie Williams,
Hannah McLain,
Hailey Hilton,
Jaci Maze,
Gianna Ocello,
Jessica Gil, and
Neyda Martinez were recognized in a pregame ceremony, honoring their time as Cougars.
