AZUSA, Calif. – Coming into Thursday night's match, Azusa Pacific knew it was going to be a tough match-up against No. 16 Point Loma, the defending national champions.
The Cougars earned its second straight loss of the season, falling 0-2 to Point Loma in their first home match in a month. The team now holds a record of 5-2-1, with a 1-2 mark in conference play.
How it Happened: The Sea Lions struck early, with Jillian Tubbs breaking through the Cougars' defense and assisting Alana Diaz for the opening goal just two minutes into the match.
Both teams depended on its strong defense for the rest of the half as the Cougars were held to just two shots off the first 45 minutes.
Then 15 minutes into the second half, Point Loma extended its lead as Alyssa Ketcham sent a cross to Lily Lanez in the middle of the box, who put it away to make the score 2-0.Â
With 30 minutes still left to play, the Cougars found themselves with some nice looks, hoping to make a quick comeback. Both
Jaci Maze and
Faith Crouse had shots on goal but neither were able to find the back of the net. Then late in the game,
Alexis Fuller lined up for a shot but it hit off the top of the crossbar as the Sea Lions walked off the field with their fifth straight shutout of the season.Â
