Softball Headed to Championship Round of PacWest Tournament

Azusa Pacific defeated Biola 1-0 Thursday night to advance to the Championship of the PacWest tournament.

LA MIRADA, Calif. - It was a nailbiter once again, as Azusa Pacific defeated Biola 1-0 in their sixth time facing off this season and second in the PacWest tournament. Katie Korstrom went the distance, throwing her 18th complete game of the season and picking up her 19th win on the year. Caitlin DeCanio provided the go-ahead RBI as the Cougars had timely hitting while being limited to only four hits.

How it Happened: Scoring was few and far between in a pitching duel where Korstrom and Biola's ace Raylene Roybal faced off once again. The bottom of the fourth proved key for the Cougars as Izzy Rivera and Korstrom led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Mia Alvarez then laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third for Azusa Pacific. DeCanio then came up to the plate and drilled a comebacker to Biola's circle that rolled to the third baseman and allowed Rivera to score, giving Azusa Pacific a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles then managed to load the bases in their half of the fifth, but the Cougars were able to escape the damage. The Cougars were held to just one run and were not able to push a runner across for the remainder of the game, but one run was all Azusa Pacific needed as Korstrom shut it down in the seventh, leaving a Biola runner stranded, as the Cougars picked up the 1-0 victory.

Up Next: Azusa Pacific is headed to the Championship finals of the first ever PacWest softball tournament, where they will face Concordia. The Cougars have to beat the Golden Eagles twice to claim the title, and the first game is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Freedom Field. If you cannot attend the game, you can live stream it HERE.
