WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. – The Cougar acrobatics and tumbling team competed in seven event finals on this final day of competition at the 2023 NCATA National Championships at West Liberty University.
For each of the 15 heats in the event finals (each heat from the acro, pyramid, toss, and tumbling events in a regular meet), the four highest scorers from Thursday's quarterfinal meets were joined by the highest scoring competitor from a non-qualifying school. The day started with a bang for the Cougars, as their senior all-American duo of
Jacie Van de Zilver and
Madiha Morris claimed the title in the 5-element acro event. It is the second consecutive season that Azusa Pacific has won that event at the national championships.
While the Cougars did not win any additional event titles, they did gain valuable experience for next season, as
Maria Hurst and
Sarah Lang both got to compete in solo pass finals, as well the the team earning spots in two of the three toss event finals. Azusa Pacific will look to build around Lang, Hurst, and more as they look towards the 2024 season, coming off a 4-4 finish in 2022.
