SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Just a week after falling by 11 goals to Pacific, Azusa Pacific came back and fought to the finish against the same Tiger team on Friday, as the Cougars were beat 14-10 in the quarterfinals of the GCC Tournament.
Kyra Kahahawai scored a team-high three goals for the Cougars, while
Maritza Ochoa and
Shyanne Rainey added two apiece.
How It Happened: The first eight minutes of action would turn out to be the Tigers' best period of offensive production, as Pacific put six in the back of the net, while the Cougars were limited to just two goals. In the second period, the Cougars would double up their first quarter goals with four, but Pacific also added four more goals to take a 10-6 lead into halftime.
Kahahawai would score the first two goals of the third period to draw the Cougars to within two at 10-8, but that was the closest that Azusa Pacific would get. In the fourth period, Pacific would score two more goals before Rainey put away the final goal of the game for either team with just over three minutes to play.
By the Numbers: The Tigers finished 14-for-21 shooting (.667), while Azusa Pacific was 10-for-23 (.435). Pacific drew seven exclusions and converted on all but one of its power plays, while the Cougars forced 10 exclusions but only scored on four of their advantage opportunities.
Up Next: The Cougars will have a consolation game tomorrow. Depending on the outcome of the remaining games in the tournament today, they will either play at 10 am in the 7th place game (two lowest seeded losing teams from day one) or the fifth place game at noon (two highest seeded losing teams from day two). Azusa Pacific entered this week's tournament as the sixth-seed of eight teams. Stay tuned to the GCC website for updates on which game the Cougars will be playing in.
