CLAREMONT, Calif - Azusa Pacific went 2-0 on Saturday at the Claremont Convergence. With the pair of victories, the Cougars are now 11-7, and they have won 10 of their last 12 games.Â
Game One: Azusa Pacific 12, Cal State East Bay 11
Azusa Pacific was able to climb out to an 8-5 lead through the first two periods of the game, with Kyra Kahahawai collecting three goals and Kaelene De Bie picking up two for the Cougars.Â
Cal State East Bay won the second half by a 6-4 margin, as the Pioneers were able to put two shots in the back of the net early in the third period. Azusa Pacific responded with a goal of their own and two more before the end of the period by Shyanne Rainey and Skylar Ford.Â
The Cougars were able to pick up one goal in the fourth period by way of Madeline Schultz, but the Pioneers dented the twine four times in the final 10 minutes to cut the deficit to one. Cal State East Bay's effort was not enough as the Cougars were able to hold onto a 12-11 victory.Â
Ford and Kahahawai each scored three goals in the game, while Carley Anderson earned the win in goal with six saves.Â
Game Two: Azusa Pacific 17, McKendree 8
The first two periods consisted of a steady offensive attack and staunch defense by the Cougars, which allowed them to take a comfortable 9-1 lead into halftime. Of the Cougars' nine first half goals, four were scored by Schultz, while Kahahawai and Maritza Ochoa each added two. Defensively, the lone goal allowed by the Cougars over the first two periods came with just 30 seconds to go in the first period.
In the third quarter, the Cougar attack was slowed, as McKendree posted a 5-1 scoring advantage to cut the lead down to 10-6 heading into the fourth and final period. Azusa Pacific regained its offensive momentum over the final eight minutes of play, scoring seven goals while holding McKendree to just two in the fourth quarter. Rainey and Montana White each found the back of the cage three times in the fourth.
Anderson earned another victory in goal, tallying six saves, including a fourth quarter five-meter penalty stop. Rainey finished with a game-high five goals, while Schultz had four.
By the Numbers: Through Azusa Pacific's first six games of the season, the Cougars averaged 8.3 goals per game. Since the Cougars' 10 wins over their last 12 run started (January 28 vs. Redlands), Azusa Pacific is averaging 15.3 goals per game, and the Cougars' shooting percentage is nearly .600.Â
