Come Back Stronger

Azusa Pacific softball secured a split on day two of the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif.

TURLOCK, Calif. - The Cougars earned a split on day two of the Tournament of Champions. Azusa Pacific opened the day with a 4-3 loss to San Francisco and came back later in the night to secure a 5-2 victory over Stanislaus State. Katie Korstrom was 3-for-6 at the plate and Izzy Rivera drove in three on the day. On the mound, Liz Phillips came on in relief in both games, pitching a combined 7.2 innings, only giving up two hits and not allowing a run on the day.

GAME ONE: San Francisco State 4, Azusa Pacific 3

The Gators got ahead early as a leadoff double followed by a single allowed San Francisco State to take a 1-0 lead.

The Cougars immediately responded in the bottom half of the first with two unanswered runs. Back-to-back walks from Kinsey Erickson and Carley Gay and a wild pitch set up Rivera who drove in two with a single to right center. Korstrom then singled and another wild pitch put runners on second and third for Mia Alvarez. Alvarez produced an RBI groundout, allowing Azusa Pacific to take a 3-1 lead.

San Francisco State led off the third inning with back-to-back singles and a groundout allowed the Gators to cut the deficit in half. With two outs, San Francisco State hit a two-run home run to take the lead.

That was all the scoring left in the game as the Cougars dropped the second game of the tournament to the Gators by a final score of 4-3.

GAME TWO: Azusa Pacific 5, Stanislaus State 2

Azusa Pacific took advantage of opportunities early. Three consecutive singles and miscues from the Stanislaus State defense allowed two runs to come across for the Cougars in the second inning.

The Warriors tied the game up in the fourth inning off four walks and a single, but the Cougars took the lead right back in the fifth when a double from Korstrom scored Erickson to take a 3-2 lead.

In the fifth, a single from Bella Fraser scored Gay to double the Cougars lead and in the seventh, Alvarez provided insurance when she blasted her second home run of the season over the left field fence to take a 5-2 lead.

Phillips did not allow a hit in the Warriors half of the seventh to help secure the 5-2 victory for the Cougars.

By the Numbers: Six different Cougars registered a hit on the day with Alvarez, Korstrom and Rivera collecting multi-hit games. This is Azusa Pacific's fourth straight win over Stanislaus State dating back to the 2018 season and the Cougars now hold an 19-15 record on the year.

Up Next: Azusa Pacific will wrap up play at the Tournament of Champions tomorrow when they face Cal Poly Humboldt at 9:00 a.m. and Cal State San Bernardino at 2:00 p.m.
