Attack on Titan(s)

Cougars build big advantage, then hold on for two-goal win over Cal State Fullerton.

GLENDORA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific never trailed in this homecoming battle in the pool, earning a 14-12 nonconference victory over Cal State Fullerton Friday afternoon at the Citrus College Aquatics Center.  Montana White led the way with a seven-point effort in the win.

How It Happened:  The Cougars struck on each of their first two possessions, starting with a power play goal from Kyra Kahahawai just 36 seconds into the game.  That was the first of five goals the Cougars would score on the man advantage in the contest.  The Cougars got five goals from five different players in the opening quarter, holding a 5-3 advantage at the end of the first.  The second quarter would be a defensive battle for a long stretch, as the Titans slowed the game down and briefly tied the contest at 5-5.  But Shyanne Rainey fired a beautiful backhand shot into the net, then scored on a power play the next trip down to put the Cougars back ahead by multiple goals, and White would get her second of the half on the possession after that, allowing Azusa Pacific to take an 8-6 lead into halftime.

The Cougars continued to take control of the game in the third, scoring the first three goals of the second half and stretching the lead to five.  By the time Kalene De Bie out in the Cougars' fifth power play goal of the contest, Azusa Pacific led 12-7 with less then two minutes remaining in the third.  Maritza Ochoa and White would score the first two goals of the final period, giving the home team their largest lead of the day at 14-8.  That would prove critical as the Titans made a furious charge in the closing minutes, but could not get closer than two before the final whistle.

By the Numbers:  White scored once in each quarter, finishing with four goals and three assists.  Eight different Cougars scored a goal, and four scored at least twice.  Madeline Schulz's two goals give her 62 on the season, just two shy of the program's single-season record, which has stood since 2011.  Skylar Ford dished out five assists, giving her a team-leading 19 on the season.  Daniela Herrero Miralles had nine saves and four steals in net.  This was the second time the Cougars have defeated Cal State Fullerton this season, having beaten the Titans by a 21-7 count exactly four weeks earlier.

Up Next: The Cougars (13-9) will resume conference play on the road next Saturday, paying a visit to Cal Baptist.  The action on Riverside will start at 11:00 a.m.
