Headed Home

Azusa Pacific softball dropped both games at Hawai'i Hilo on Tuesday to wrap up play on the islands.

HILO, Hawai'i - Azusa Pacific softball dropped both games of today's doubleheader against Hawai'i Hilo to conclude play on the islands.

GAME ONE: Hawai'i Hilo 4, Azusa Pacific 2

The Vulcans jumped on the board first as they scored in their half of the second and third to take a 2-0 lead. The top of the fifth looked promising for the Cougars as Caitlin DeCanio doubled to right center and a SAC bunt by Julia Olivares advanced her to third. With one out, Kinsey Erickson singled to score DeCanio and cut Hawai'i Hilo's lead down to one. Two groundouts ended the inning and the Vulcans were able to escape the Cougars threat.

A home run by Hawai'i Hilo in the 5th put them up by two runs yet again and they were able to tack on another run in their half of the 6th to widen the scoring margin to three.

Azusa Pacific rallied in their half of the seventh, taking advantage of wild pitches and scoring one off a SAC fly from Ally Chin, but that was all the scoring that the Cougars could come up with as they dropped the first game 4-2.

GAME TWO: Hawai'i Hilo 5, Azusa Pacific 2

Once again, the Vulcans got the scoring going on their home field in the first few innings as they took a 5-0 lead over the Cougars three innings in.

It wasn't until the fifth inning that Azusa Pacific found themselves on the board. A double from Jaelah Burrell followed by another two out double from Erickson cut the Vulcans lead to four. In the sixth, Izzy Rivera put her first home run of the season over the fence to cut the deficit to three, but that was all the Cougars could get across as they dropped the final game of the series 5-2.

By the Numbers: DeCanio was 4-for-6 at the plate today with a double and Erickson was 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base. Liz Phillips came on in relief in both games and through 5.1 innings pitched, gave up just two hits, one walk and struck out one.

Up Next: The Cougars will return home to face Academy of Art this Friday, Mar. 17th. The first game of the double header will begin at 4:00 p.m. at the Cougar Softball Complex.
