SEASIDE, Calif. – Azusa Pacific went on the road and cruised to a dominant 17-6 win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars, winners of two straight games, are 3-5 overall.
From the start, it was clear that the Otters would have their hands full with Madeline Schultz, who would score five unanswered goals in the first quarter to put the Cougars on top early. Schultz would finish the game with eight goals, which matches her collegiate career-high.
Before the Otters would score, Azusa Pacific pushed its lead to 7-0 with 5:25 to play before halftime, as Kaelene De Bie scored on a powerplay (6:02) and Kyra Kahahawai converted on a penalty (5:25). Cal State Monterey Bay finally put a point on the board with just under three minutes left in the second quarter. Maritza Ochoa would add one more goal in the first half for the Cougars, sending the visitors into the break with a comfortable 8-1 lead.
The third quarter was the only stretch in which Cal State Monterey Bay was able to score multiple goals, as it scored four in the period, however, Azusa Pacific would score four of its own to maintain a comfortable lead throughout. The Cougars had four different goal-scorers in the third, as Kahahawai (5:12), Alyssa Perez, Carley Anderson, and Rachel Ahumada each found the back of the cage. Azusa Pacific took a 12-5 lead into the fourth period.
Over the final eight minutes of play, the Cougars would outscore the Otters by a 5-1 tally, as Schultz added three more goals, while Ochoa and Maria Boix Pascual each added scores in the fourth period.
The Cougars finished with 16 assists, led by four from Rachel Ahumada, and three apiece from Kahahawai and Ochoa, who also each scored two goals. In goal, Daniela Herrero Miralles tallied seven saves.
By the Numbers: The Cougars finished with a .415 shot percentage (17-for-41), while they held the Otters to a shot percentage of .214 (6-for-28). All but one of Cal State Monterey Bay's goals came on powerplay opportunities, as the Otters finished 5-for-13, while the Cougars went 2-for-8. Defensively, Azusa Pacific was able to force 12 steals, as Ahumada, De Bie, Shyanne Rainey, Ochoa, and Herrero Miralles each had two apiece.
Up Next: The Cougars will be back in the pool at the Fresno State Invitational on February 17 & 18, with three games on the schedule. The Cougars will open against host Fresno State on Friday, and then battle UC Davis and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps the following day.
