THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Azusa Pacific wore out the nets at the Tina Finali Tournament on Friday, scoring 40 goals between the two games that the Cougars played. In the first game of the day, the Cougars beat Division I Cal State Fullerton 21-7, and then followed it up with a 19-11 win over Ottawa (Ariz.) in the afternoon. The two victories lifted the Cougars to above .500 on the season, as Azusa Pacific is now 7-6, and winners of six of its last seven matches.
GAME ONE: Azusa Pacific 21, Cal State Fullerton 7
The Cougars wasted no time securing the momentum on Friday morning, racing out to an 8-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. The attack came from all over the pool for the Cougars, with seven different players scoring in the first quarter, led by two goals from Madeline Schultz.
Azusa Pacific would stretch its lead out to 10-0 before the Titans finally put a point on the board, as Cal State Fullerton's first goal came with 2:24 to play before halftime. Maria Boix Pascual added one more first half goal for the Cougars with 1:37 on the clock, which sent Azusa Pacific into the break with a double-digit lead of 11-1.
In the third period, the two teams each scored five goals, but the Cougars lead would remain at nine or higher. With 21 seconds on the clock in the third, Catherine Ahumada found the back of the cage to send the Cougars into the fourth with a 16-6 advantage.Â
Over the final eight minutes, the Cougars maintained a lead of 10 or more goals, and with a minute and a half to play, Alyssa Perez scored Azusa Pacific's 20th goal of the contest, marking just the eighth time in program history in which the Cougars have broken the 20-goal threshold in a single game.
Perez and Shyanne Rainey shared a team-high four goals, Schultz had three goals, while Boix Pascual, Kaelene De Bie, and Skylar Ford each added two goals apiece. In goal, Daniela Herrero Miralles had seven saves.
Azusa Pacific, which entered the match with a team shooting percentage of .482, finished 21-for-29 with an impressive percentage of .724. Defensively, the Cougars held the Titans to a .241 shooting percentage (7-for-29). Despite several power play opportunities, Cal State Fullerton went 0-for-7, while the Cougars were 1-for-3 in advantage situations.
GAME TWO: Azusa Pacific 19, Ottawa (Ariz.) 11
The Cougars doubled up Ottawa in the first quarter, scoring four goals to Ottawa's two. De Bie found the back of the net twice in the first eight minutes of action. In the second period, Schultz went on her own 3-0 run, as she buried three consecutive goals into the cage to put the Cougars up 7-2. After a pair of goals by Ottawa, and a strike from White, Azusa Pacific held a 8-4 halftime lead.
Azusa Pacific opened the third period with a 3-1 run over the first two minutes of play to extend the lead to 11-4. The third was the Cougars best offensive period, as they finished with eight goals while holding the Spirit to three. Entering the fourth and final period, Azusa Pacific was up 16-7.
In the fourth, White and Schultz scored back-to-back goals to give the Cougars' their largest lead of the contest at 19-8 with just under four minutes to play. Over the final four minutes, the Spirit were able to put three away for the eventual 19-11 final score.
Both teams were efficient offensively, with the Cougars finishing with a shot percentage of .655 (19-for-29), while Ottawa was at .579 (11-for-19).Â
Schultz led Azusa Pacific with five goals, and White had three. This season, Schultz is averaging over three goals a game.Â
