Baseball Swept In Colorado

Late runs for Colorado Mesa are too much for Cougars to overcome in finale of four game series.

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - No. 14 Azusa Pacific lost 6-3 to No. 11 Colorado Mesa on Saturday, which secured the Mavericks' four-game series sweep and dropped the Cougars record to 3-6.

Colorado Mesa scored the first run of the afternoon in the bottom of the second inning, and the score would remain at 1-0 until the Cougars took their turn to hit in the top of the fifth inning. Omar Lopez led off the fifth for the Cougars, and the shortstop once again sent a ball over the left field fence, as his solo home run now extends his streak to five consecutive games in which he has hit a home run. A couple batters later, Carson Collett hit a single, and Cameron Lee followed with a double to put runners on second and third with one out. Collet and Lee would come around to score a few batters later, when George Christison hit a two-RBI single to put the Cougars ahead 3-1.

The Cougars' lead would be short-lived, with Colorado Mesa's Declan Wiesner hitting a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score up at 3-3.

While the game would remain tied for the next two and a half innings, the Mavericks take the lead late with a three run bottom of the eighth, and Azusa Pacific would be sat down in order in the top of the ninth to close out the ball game.

The Cougars had five hits in the game, with five different players tallying one hit.

On the mound, Tyler Herges started the game for Azusa Pacific, throwing six innings and allowing five hits and three earned runs, while striking out six batters he faced. Andrew White worked a scoreless inning of relief for the Cougars in the bottom of the seventh, and then Jake Vargas came on to pitch in the eighth inning, as he was charged with the loss on three earned runs. With the bases loaded and two away in the bottom of the eighth, Brendon Cannings was called in to pitch, and Cannings was able to get Wiesner to lineout to end the inning.

Up Next: The Cougars will be back at home on Friday, February 17, when they host rival Biola for a non-conference doubleheader starting at noon. The two teams will then meet down in La Mirada for another non-conference doubleheader the following day, with first pitch set for 11:00 am.
