AZUSA, Calif. – Annaka Jorgenson became only the fourth Cougar to top 1,500 career kills as the Cougars swept Westmont, 25-23, 25-21, 25-13 Thursday evening inside the Felix Event Center. It is the team's 9th win in their last 10 matches.
How It Happened: In a first set that featured six ties and three lead changes, Westmont jumped out to a 5-1 lead. The Warriors held a slight advantage for most of the set, and had regained a three-point margin at 20-17. That was when Jorgenson got a bump set from the back row and tipped it just over the block for the milestone kill. That kill sparked a 5-0 run that would give the Cougars the lead, and they would eventually claim the set off a Sarah Wilson kill.
The second set saw the Cougars holding a narrow lead most of the way, with Westmont tying the set on seven different occasions. Kendyl Macaskill would play a large roll in giving the Cougars the decisive points, racking up four kills, two aces and a block assists in the set as Azusa Pacific won five of the last eight points to claim a two-set lead, 25-21.
The home side dominated the third set, jumping out to a 15-3 lead and hitting a blistering .458. Jorgenson took over the game, with eight kills in the set, while Macaskill and Paige Johnstone each had a pair of aces, with Johnstone's second of the set coming on match point.
By the Numbers: Jorgenson had a match-high 13 kills, putting her career total at 1,511. She is just four away from passing Stephanie Benitez (1991-95) for third on the all-time list. Macaskill had 9 kills and 5 aces, while Jorgenson and Johnstone tied for the lead defensively with 8 digs. Seven different Cougars picked up a kill in the match, and six helped out on at least one block, with Kyra Palmbush leading the way in that category with 5. This is the Cougars' 18th consecutive win over Westmont, a streak that stretches back to October of 2004. The Cougars now lead the all-time series with the Warriors, 47-34.
