Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Joel Simeone

An Untimely Eruption

Hawai’i Hilo strikes quickly for two goals in first half, beats Cougars 3-1.

HILO, Hawai'i – The Cougars were unable to complete a sweep of their Hawaiian road trip, as Hawai'i Hilo broke through for a 3-1 win Saturday afternoon on the Vulcan Soccer Field.  It is the first time the Vulcans have beaten Azusa Pacific in program history.

How It Happened:  The Vulcans broke onto the scoreboard just over 17 minutes into the game.  A long ball over the top up the Cougars' right flank was one-touched into the box, and the resulting centering pass skipped past two defenders and left a wide-open net for Colby Lee.  Just four minutes later, Lee would be the one assisting on the Vulcans' second goal of the game, collecting a pass after a Cougar giveaway in the defensive third and leading the intercepting Alex Carmona to the corner of the six-yard box, from where he was able to chip the keeper to double the advantage for the home side.

The Cougars would claw a goal back early in the second half.  Musah Yansaneh got the ball and passed it to Gabriel Oropeza, who dribbled twice and fired a long shot along the ground from about 35 yards away.  The ball skipped once, then snuck through the keeper's legs to cut the lead in half.  But any hopes of equalizing were dashed when the Vulcans struck again in the 64th minute to regain their two-goal lead, and the Cougars would only register a single shot attempt over the final 25 minutes of play.

By the Numbers:  Oropeza's goal is his fourth of the season, the second most on the team.  His goal was the only shot on target the Cougars had in the game, and the Cougars as a team were outshot for the game, 8-3.  Prior to Hilo's first score of the afternoon, the Cougars had gone a season-best 324 minutes without conceding a goal.  The Cougars had won all nine prior meetings, outscoring the Vulcans 27-10 over that stretch.

Up Next:  Azusa Pacific (6-8-2, 5-4 PacWest) will come home for their final game of the season, a Cornerstone Cup clash against Biola.  Kickoff on Friday evening at the Cougar Soccer Complex is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.  The Cougars will honor their senior class before the game, and both that ceremony and the game can be viewed HERE.
