AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific saw its seven game winning streak come to a halt at the hands of No. 15 Chaminade, falling to the Silverswords in straight sets (25-11, 25-22, 25-18) Friday evening inside the Felix Event Center. Annaka Jorgenson had 9 kills and 8 digs for the Cougars in a losing effort.
How It Happened: The two teams entered the contest knowing whomever won would find themselves in second place in the conference with two weeks to go. Azusa Pacific jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first set. Sadly, that would prove to be the high-water mark of the evening for the home side, as Chaminade promptly went on a 22-5 run, showing the form that has led the Silverswords to a 26-3 record on the season. Chaminade hit a blistering .500 for the set as a team, racking up 16 kills and four blocks in the process to take the first set 25-11.
The second set was the most closely contested of the evening, with the Cougars holding a small lead for much of it. The Cougars got kills from four different players as part of a 6-1 run early in the set to take a three-point advantage, and they would still lead as late in the frame as 20-19. But Chaminade again took charge down the stretch, feeding their outside hitter Ajack Malual, who had 4 of her match-high 15 kills as part of a 7-2 run to close the set and put the Silverswords up 2 sets to none.
The third set played out much like the first, with Chaminade taking the lead with a 6-1 run early and never looking back. The Silverswords had 16 kills in the set and aided their offensive effort with five blocks on the defensive side, giving the visitors 12 blocks on the night. The Cougars were unable to pull closer than two points at any time in the final frame, with Chaminade winning the final four points to complete the sweep of the Cougars, both on the night and for the season.
By the Numbers: The Cougars were held to a .114 hitting percentage for the match. Jorgenson led the team with 9 kills, while Kyra Palmbush added 8 kills and 2 blocks. Paige Johnstone had 18 digs from the libero position. Both teams served up 3 aces on the night, which puts the Cougars' season total at 119. This is the third straight season that Chaminade has won both head-to-head matchups, though Azusa Pacific still leads the all-time series, 13-8.
Up Next: Azusa Pacific (14-9, 11-4 PacWest) has a short turnaround time, as they will be right back on the floor in the Felix Event Center Saturday afternoon against Hawai'i Hilo. First serve against the Vulcans is scheduled for 3:00 p.m., and the game can be livestreamed HERE.
