SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific fell 3-1 to Westmont on the road in a PacWest battle on Saturday afternoon. Despite the loss, Hamza Adam collected the first goal of his Cougar career as Azusa Pacific moves to 3-6-2 on the year and 2-2 in conference.
How it Happened: Azusa Pacific found themselves down early when the Warriors quickly found a goal in the 17th minute of play. Just minutes later, Juancarlos Rodriguez had an opportunity to find the back of the net, but his shot was blocked by a Westmont defender.
Westmont continued a steady presence on their attacking half, putting the ball in the back of the net again to take a 2-0 lead over the Cougars. Azusa Pacific found an opportunity towards the end of the half when Mario Shuteriqi found a shot on goal, but the Westmont goalkeeper was able to come up with the save. The score remained 2-0 heading into the half.
The Cougars collected two shots on goal early in the second half, both from Issaka Salifu, but the Warrior's goalkeeper halted Azusa Pacific's chances in their final third. The Warriors then pressed down field, taking a 3-0 lead in the 69th minute.
With 42 seconds left in the game, the Cougars found the back of the net, preventing a shutout. Zedan Mutlu contributed in getting the ball to Adam in the attack who put the ball between the posts, cutting the deficit to 3-1, which was the final in Santa Barbara.
By the Numbers: Both sides had 11 shots through 90 minutes of play, but the Warriors collected nine shots on frame compared to the Cougars six. Leo Moreno and Alexis Rodriguez combined for six saves on the day, moving Azusa Pacific's total saves to 43 on the year. Nine different Cougars have found the back of the net so far this season, combining for 11 goals.
