Take Three

Cougars snap three-game skid with long-range barrage against Chaminade.

HONOLULU, Hawai'i –  Azusa Pacific got back into the win column in their final game on their annual Hawai'i road trip, taking down Chaminade by an 84-70 final Friday evening inside McCabe Gymnasium.  The Cougars hit 13 three-pointers, including nine in the first half en route to the victory.

How It Happened:  Azusa Pacific never trailed, though Chaminade did keep it close in the early going.  Ken West put up eight points early, which allowed the Cougars to have a 15-13 advantage at the midway point of the first half.  From that point, the Cougars turned on the jets, unleashing a 28-8 run that would see them stretch the lead to 20.  Azusa Pacific would be ahead by as many as 24 in the first half, settling for a 50-29 advantage going into the locker rooms.

After the teams traded baskets their first couple trips down the floor in the second half, Chaminade would put together a 9-0 run that cut the lead to 14 at 58-44 five minutes into the half.  Hayden Grey, however, proceeded to spark an 11-0 run for the Cougars to stretch the lead back above 20 points and put the game out of reach.  The sophomore point guard had a season-high 22 points, including 15 in the second half.  By the time the Silverswords were able to get the lead back down to 14, there was only one minute remaining in the contest as the Cougars got back into the win column.

Inside the Numbers:  In addition to his 22 points, Grey finished with eight rebounds and four assists.  Nate Kleppe had 18 points, including four triples, to go with nine boards.  Justin Hemsley had a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double off the bench, while West had 12 points and Bryce Sloan finished with 11.  Azusa Pacific grabbed 12 offensive rebounds in the first half, which they converted into 17 second-chance points.  The Cougars have now won four consecutive meetings with the Silverswords, and gained some valuable experience with the gym where the PacWest tournament will be held in March.

Up Next:  Azusa Pacific (13-6, 8-4 PacWest) will return home for their first crack at Biola in Cornerstone Cup action.  Opening tip in the Felix Event Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and the game can be streamed HERE.
