Cougars Host #6 Point Loma in a Non-Conference Clash

Azusa Pacific women's soccer fell to Point Loma in a non-conference battle on Saturday evening.

AZUSA, CALIF - A Saturday night battle between Azusa Pacific and Point Loma took place at the Cougars Soccer Complex, with the Cougars falling to the Sea Lions by a final score of 0-3. The Cougars entered the night coming off a great win against Cal Poly Pomona as the Sea Lions were looking to recover after a 1-2 loss against Concordia.

How It Happened: It was  a tale of two different halves in this non-conference match as the first 45 ended at 0-0. The second half saw the Sea Lions surge to a 3-0 win and gave the Cougars just their second loss of the season. With a total of eight shots on target including on penalty, the Sea Lions displayed their dominance in the second half.

"We just didn't play well" expressed Lincoln when asked about the loss. While the Cougars put up a fight for the first fifty minutes, their inability to keep possession and switch the field allowed Point Loma to capitalize. The Cougars were able to get five shots on goal and with a couple of fine saves from Goalkeeper Maddie Williams, kept the score as close as it could be.

Point Loma's Alana Diaz provided a second half brace where she scored in the 51st and 66th minute, while defender Emma Thrapp secured the victory when her penalty kick was out of reach for Williams in the 73rd minute. It was Williams who was shown a yellow card for her foul on a Sea Lion attacker.

This loss brings the Cougars record to 3-2-2 and will wind out the Cougar's official pre-season schedule.

By the Numbers: Despite the end result, Azusa Pacific was able to collect nine shots with five on goal. The Cougars also matched the Sea Lions in corner kicks throughout the game with three a piece. Alexis Fuller, Hailey Hilton and Makenzie Jerome all collected their first shots on goal on the season, as Jerome posted two shots on goal in the 21 minutes of action she saw in the match.

Up Next: The Cougars will open PacWest play against Concordia on Friday, September 30th at the Cougar Soccer Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m., and if you cannot attend the game, you can watch it for free HERE.
