Softball Wraps Up Regular Season With a Split

Cougars take one of two at Concordia on the final day of the season.

IRVINE, Calif. – Azusa Pacific's softball team closed its regular season with a doubleheader at Concordia, dropping the first game to the Eagles by a final of 2-1 before shutting them out 3-0 in the regular-season finale.

Game 1:  Concordia 2, Azusa Pacific 1

The Cougars were looking to make a final statement to try to impress the selection committee, and for the longest time it looked like this game would be an impressive one.  Katie Korstrom limited Concordia to just two hits over the first 5.2 innings, while the Cougars had struck for a run in the fourth when Madison Salgado hit a ball off the second baseman's glove that allowed Amanda Woods to score the game's first run.  Concordia drew a walk to lead off the second inning, but a ground ball double play meant there were two outs with the bases empty.  Unfortunately, The next Eagle batter drew a walk and was followed by a home run down the left field line that provided all the offense for Concordia in the game.  The Cougars would get the tying run on base in the top of the seventh, but were unable to advance said runner past first base.  Korstrom struck out two over six innings, while offensively Azusa Pacific got five hits from five different players.

Game 2:  Azusa Pacific 3, Concordia 0

It turned out the Cougars just needed to wait another hour or two to make that statement they were hoping for.  Once again, Azusa Pacific opened the scoring in the top of the fourth, when Amanda Woods led off the frame with her third home run of the season, which cleared the fence in left center.  This time, the Cougars were able to add to the advantage in the top of the sixth.  Dani Burghardt led off the inning with a double.  Carley Gay came in to pinch run for the senior third baseman, and advanced to third on a Woods single.  Two batters and one Eagle pitching change later, Woods and Gay executed a double steal to bring home an insurance run.  Woods would later score on a double by Izzy Rivera.  While they were building this lead, game two starter Sydnie Sahhar was keeping Concordia stymied in the circle, holding the Eagles to four hits while striking out four in a complete game effort.  Woods went 2-3 with a pair of runs scored to lead the offense.

By the Numbers:  Woods' home run was the 12 of her career, and the second in the last four games.  It was also the 23rd the Cougars have hit as a team this season.  As a team, Azusa Pacific had the best batting average in the PacWest this season, hitting .304 collectively.  The Cougars also led the conference in runs (244), total hits (427), doubles (74), triples (14), on-base percentage (.365) and stolen bases (72).  Azusa Pacific finishes the regular season 35-15, 25-7 in PacWest play.  Both win totals are the highest the Cougars have achieved since their lone PacWest conference title in 2016.

Playoff Implications:  The Cougars – who finished the season second in the PacWest – were ranked seventh in the second round of regional rankings last week, and will get to see one more set of rankings on Wednesday that will include this split against a Concordia side that was ranked second.  Concordia earned the PacWest's automatic bid to the NCAA West Region playoffs as the conference's regular-season champion.  The Cougars will be hoping for an at-large berth and today's split leaves them in good position to earn said bid, which would be the program's first since 2016.  The field will be announced on Sunday, May 8, with the announcement being streamed live on NCAA.com.
