COVINA, Calif. — Azusa Pacific water polo split the season series versus No. 21 ranked Brown after a defeat on Friday afternoon by a final score 10-6 at Charter Oak High School. The Cougars defeated the Bears 10-9 in the opening UCSB Tournament earlier in the season. Azusa Pacific now sits at 6-13 overall on the season.
Shyanne Rainey tallied a pair of goals to lead the Cougars offense while
Kate Green-Jones tallied 11 saves in the loss.
How it Happened: The Bears would take the early lead after scoring on the power play in the first minute of the game to make it 1-0. The Cougars answered right back less than 15 seconds later as Rainey scored to tie the game. The Cougars then went on the power play as
Skylar Ford scored to give Azusa Pacific its first lead of the game 2-1. Brown would tally three of the final four goals in the first period to take a 4-3 lead after one.
Just over a minute into the second period, Rainey would tie the score at 4-apiece once again as it was her second goal of the game.
Turning Point: Brown scored three unanswered goals to extend its lead to 7-4 in the second period, the first two came on the power play while the last was an even strength goal. The Cougars had two exclusions and a turnover which led to the three goals for the Bears.
Milena Guzmán Ortiz, Azusa Pacific's leading scorer, would tally the final goal before the half for the Cougars to make it 7-5.
In the third, the two teams traded blows just over five minutes into the new half. After a Brown goal made it 8-5,
Montana White scored to cut the deficit back to two for Azusa Pacific.
The final two goals however would be scored by Brown as they defeated the Cougars 10-6.
By the Numbers: The Bears outscored the Cougars by one goal in each period to win the game by a 10-6 margin. Just four total goals were scored after halftime between the two teams while 12 were scored in the first two periods. The two teams played each other twice this season as each team defeated the other.
