Starters Make Sales Pitch

Cougars sweep Silverswords to complete 11-1 homestand.

AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific got a pair of outstanding pitching performances from Liz Phillips and Katie Korstrom to complete a four-game sweep of Chaminade Wednesday evening at the Cougar Softball Complex, winning both halves of the doubleheader by scores of 9-1 and 3-0.

Game 1:  Azusa Pacific 9, Chaminade 1 (5 innings)

Azusa Pacific scored in every inning for the second time in the series.  The first three Cougars got on base, with Aly Montesino singing in Olivia Smith for the game's first run.  In the second, Smith drove in a run with another hit, then scored on a two-run triple by Ally Chin, which made the score 4-0.  The left fielder got her third hit of the game in the following inning, a two-out double that drove in another pair of runs, stretching the lead to six.  Then the bottom of the order got in on the action in the fourth, with Sommer Quinones driving in two with a triple to right center, then coming around to score on a hit by Erica Hanson, to bring the score to 9-0.

Chaminade would score a run via a wild pitch in the top of the fifth, but that was all that Phillips would allow, holding the Silverswords to just three hits and two walks over five innings for the complete-game victory.  Smith had three hits and three RBI to lead the offense for the Cougars, and eight different players had a hit.

Game 2:  Azusa Pacific 3, Chaminade 0

The offense was a little harder to come by in the late game, but Azusa Pacific found their way onto the scoreboard in the second inning.  Amanda Woods singled with one out, then stole second.  With two away, Quinones singled her home for the game's first run.  Two batters later, Quinones would score as the result of an error, doubling the advantage.  In the third inning, it was Woods' turn to come through, singling in Chin with one out to provide a third run.  That would prove to be more than enough for game two starter Korstrom, who threw a complete-game four-hitter, striking out five in the process for the shutout victory.  Woods, Quinones, and Aleah Delgado each had two hits in the nightcap for the Cougars, who have now won eight in a row.

By the Numbers:  The shutout was Korstrom's fourth of the season, and the sixth by the Cougar pitching staff.  Quinones went 2-3 at the plate in both games, raising her batting average all the way up to .370 in 27 at bats on the season.  Smith's three RBI in game one was the first multi-RBI game of her career.  The Cougars stole three bases during the doubleheader, and lead the PacWest in that category with 59 as a team.  Azusa Pacific turned a double play in each game, giving their defense 15 on the season.

Up Next:  The Cougars (24-13, 18-6 PacWest) will head north to Turlock this weekend to play five games at the Tournament of Champions.  Up first on Friday will be a 9:00 a.m. showdown with the tournament host Stanislaus State, followed later in the day by a 2:00 p.m. game against Cal State Dominguez Hills, who are currently third in the CCAA.  Livestats for the Stanislaus State game can be seen HERE.
