Opening Statement

Cougars strike for a pair of wins at their season-opening showcase in Irvine.

IRVINE, Calif. – The Azusa Pacific softball team hit the ground running on opening day, winning a pair of games against CCAA opposition over Cal State San Marcos and Sonoma State before falling to Cal State Monterey Bay in the nightcap at the D2 Kickoff Classic hosted by Concordia University-Irvine.

Game 2: Azusa Pacific 7, Cal State San Marcos 6 (10 innings)

The Cougars opened the scoring just three batters into the season, with Aly Montesino doubling in Olivia Smith in the bottom of the first inning.  San Marcos would take the lead with two runs in the third, and the game would remain at that scoreline until the bottom of the fifth, when Azusa Pacific erupted for three.  After three straight singles to load the bases to start the inning, the Cougars took advantage of a throwing error and a wild pitch.  Amanda Woods would single in another run in the bottom of the sixth, stretching the advantage to 5-2.  The Cougars would need it as San Marcos scored three in the seventh to tie the game and send the opening contest to extra innings.

With international tiebreaker rules in place, each team began extra innings with a runner already on second base.  Each team drove that runner home in the eighth inning, keeping the score level at 6-6.  The game stayed that way until the bottom of the 10th, when Katie Korstrom provided the walk-off single to plate Sommer Quinones for the victory.  Smith went 3-5 at the plate and scored twice to lead the Cougars offensively, while Liz Phillips pitched the final four innings to get the win in relief of a debuting Sydney Sahhar, who struck out four over the first six-plus frames.

Game 2: Azusa Pacific 11, Sonoma State 3 (5 innings)

The odd innings were kind to the Cougar bats in the middle game against a Seawolves side picked to finish second in the CCAA.  After spotting Sonoma State a run in the top of the first, the Cougars answered back with three of their own in the bottom half.  With one out and the bases loaded, Kinsey Erickson got the ball rolling with an RBI groundout.  That was followed by consecutive singles from Izzy Rivera and Katie Korstrom, each of which plated another run.

The Seawolves were able to tie the game in the top of the third, including executing a double steal to score the tying run, the Cougars' bats erupted again in the bottom half.  Three consecutive walks to start the inning loaded the bases and led to a pitching change.  Carley Gay was the next batter and cleared the bases with a double down the left field line that drove in all three.  Gay would score on a Montesino double later in the inning to stretch the lead to 7-3.

That score would stand until the bottom of the fifth, when the floodgates opened again.  After a one-out error, Montesino hit her third RBI double of the day to make the score 8-3, the first of five consecutive hits by Azusa Pacific that brought the score to 10-3 with the bases loaded.  A pinch-hitting Julia Olivares lined out, but the subsequent throw by the second baseman went awry, allowing Erickson to score and end the game by the run rule.  Korstrom struck out six batters over five innings to get the win in the circle, while Montesino and Dani Burghardt each had three hits in the win.

Game 3: Cal State Monterey Bay 4, Azusa Pacific 0

The Cougar bats struggled in their third game of the day, producing just three baserunners over the first six innings, including a pair of singles by Erica Hanson and Rivera.  The Otters broke through with a run in the third inning and two more in the fourth off Phillips, pitching for the second time on the day.  Monterey Bay would add a fourth run in the sixth on a wild pitch, all of which proved more than enough for Otters pitcher Cassie Gasper, who struck out six in a complete-game shutout.

By the Numbers:  Montesino went 4-12 with three doubles over the tripleheader, while Hanson led the team in batting average with a 4-9 day at the plate and hit safely in all three games.  Ten different Cougars got at least one hit on the day, and eleven scored a run.  The Cougars used four different pitchers over the course of the day, with each logging at least three innings in the circle.

Up Next:  The Cougars (2-1) will have a lighter schedule with only two games on Saturday.  They will take on another pair of CCAA foes, squaring off with Cal State East Bay at 11:30 a.m., before concluding the weekend's action against San Francisco State at 4:45 p.m.  For live stats and other information about the weekend's action, CLICK HERE.
