HILO, Hawai'i — To kick off a three-game roadtrip to the island of Hawai'i, Azusa Pacific men's basketball put the pedal to the medal throttling Hawai'i Hilo 89-51. The Cougars started fast and never looked back for the team's fifth straight victory, the Cougars are 11-6 overall and 8-2 in PacWest action which keeps them above the rest of the conference.
Allan McBride led the way with 17 points, knocked down a career-high five three-pointers, to go along with six rebounds.
Ken West had 13 points and seven rebounds while
Terrence Becvar and
Sasha French each were in double figures off the bench.
How it Happened: Tied at 4-apiece early in the first half, Azusa Pacific exploded on a 26-2 run that saw the Cougars defense not allow a field goal for over 10 minutes of game action. In the midst of the run, Azusa Pacific tallied 20 unanswered points at one point and had six different players score.
Justin Hemsley had all nine of his points during the run while
Nate Kleppe and
Hayden Gray had four points each.
Back-to-back triples from McBride and Gray stopped a 9-2 run by the Vulcans as the Cougars led 38-15 through the first 15 minutes of the opening half. The Cougars defense continued to dominate the remainder of the half holding Hawai'i Hilo to just 18 points, the second-lowest of any opponent this season. West led the Cougars into the break with 11 points, six rebounds, and a pair of assists.
To start the second half, McBride tallied the first five points of the half to put himself in double figures and keep the Cougars ahead by 24 points. French, coming off a double-double against Chaminade last week, entered the game and scored a pair of buckets for Azusa Pacific to increase the lead to 55-30. McBride drilled another pair of triples to go along with a Gray layup that built the lead to 32 points with over nine minutes left in the game.
The Cougars would hold on from there and were able to get the reserves on the scoresheet as 11 of the 12 Cougar players that saw action scored.
By the Numbers: Azusa Pacific had a season-high 54 rebounds in the win, which was seven more than the previous highest this season. The Cougars dominated bench points once again, tallying 35 off the bench. Another stat the Cougars dominated was second-chance points (17-6).
