Five Different Cougars Combine for Seven Goals in Victory Over Holy Names

Azusa Pacific women's soccer earned a 7-1 victory over Holy Names in the Bay Area this afternoon, earning a sweep over all three Northern California schools on the season.

OAKLAND, CALIF - Azusa Pacific women's soccer earned a 7-1 victory over Holy Names this afternoon, improving their overall record to 8-4-4 on the season and earning their 12th consecutive win over the Hawks, keeping a perfect record in the all-time series (12-0-0). This was the highest amount of goals scored for Azusa Pacific on the season and and five different Cougars highlighted the attack by way of Aubrey Dunaway, Ruby Fernandez, Alexis Fuller, Kayla Grisham and Sydney Smith. "There were so many seniors on the scoresheet today and I'm really proud of them." said head coach Brooke Lincoln

How it Happened - It was Holy Names that struck first in the 5th minute of the match to take a 1-0 lead. Although behind early, the Cougars would prove just how strong their attack was when they drove up field in the sixth minute and Dunaway found the equalizer to tie the game at one a piece. The Cougars momentum would hold as Mackenzie Coleman assisted Fuller in scoring her first collegiate goal to give Azusa Pacific a 2-1 advantage later in the half.

The Cougars would find their third goal of the first half by way of Fernandez finding the back of the net in the 26th minute to take a 3-1 lead heading into the second half.

The second 45 proved no different for the Cougars as they kept their presence on their attacking half while Azusa Pacific's back line shut down the Hawks attack for the rest of the match. The Cougars took a 4-1 lead in the 52nd when Dunaway dribbled down the left side of the field into the box and sent a cross in that found Grisham to put away her first goal of the season.

It was Dunaway again just 36 second later when she capitalized on an opportunity at the top of the box to send in a shot over the leaping Holy Names goalie to give the Cougars a 5-1 advantage and collect her second goal of the game. 10 minutes later it was Brooke Bern that set up Smith to put away her first goal of her collegiate career and take a 6-1 advantage.

Azusa Pacific's press would not stop there as Grisham set up Bern to drive down field again in the 83rd where she sent in another cross to Smith who was initially knocked down by a Hawks defender, but was able get past the Holy Names defense and collect her second goal of the game for the Cougars to take a 7-1 lead. This was the final after 90 minutes of play.

By the Numbers: It has been nine years since Azusa Pacific has posted this amount of goals in a game, dating all the way back to the 2013 season when the Cougars defeated Holy Names 7-0. Azusa Pacific had 25 shots with 17 on goal in today's game, with five different players collecting a goal and four different players collecting an assist. The Cougars now have 26 goals and 20 assists total on the season and with the four corner kicks in today's match, Azusa Pacific now ranks second in the PacWest in corner kicks on the year with 84. Fuller and Smith each picked up their first collegiate goals, while Fernandez and Grisham had their first goals of the season.
