Two Down, One to Go

Azusa Pacific improved to 2-0 on its road trip, defeating Dominican in straight sets on Tuesday evening in Oakland.

OAKLAND, Calif. – For the second consecutive night, Azusa Pacific earned a 3-0 road victory, as the Cougars beat Dominican (25-22, 25-15, 25-16) on Tuesday evening. The Cougars are now 10-8 overall, and 6-3 in conference play.

Azusa Pacific had a trio of players turn in efficient offensive performances in the victory. Annaka Jorgenson recorded 15 kills on 28 attempts for a hitting percentage of .393, Kendyl Macaskill notched seven kills on 14 attempts for a .429 percentage, and Lindsi Hawkins tallied six kills on 10 attempts for a .600 hitting percentage. Aubrea Banfield and Selena Balderas each had two service aces, and Banfield led the Cougars with 19 assists. Defensively, Dayton Robinett had a match-best 14 digs, Macaskill posted three block assists, while Jaela Bernard and Ioanna Georgatzi each finished with a solo block and two block assists.

How It Happened: In the first set, the Penguins held a late lead on two occasions. Dominican was up 18-16, and then again at 22-21. The Cougars would avoid the early match deficit, as a Jorgenson kill tied the score at 22-22, a Penguin attacking error put Azusa Pacific up 23-22, and then back-to-back kills by Macaskill secured the opening set.

The lone Dominican lead in the second set came at 1-0, and four unanswered points for the Cougars would give the visitors the lead for good in the frame. Azusa Pacific's largest lead of the second set was 10, which occurred on two occasions, first at 21-11, and then the final set score of 25-15.

Dominican held an 11-10 advantage in the third, but the Cougars would put the match away by taking 10 of the next 12 points to secure a comfortable 20-13 lead late. The Penguins would get no closer than five, and a kil by Macaskill won the set (25-16) and clinched the match for the Cougars.

By the Numbers: The Cougars finished with a hitting percentage of .272, recording 39 kills on 92 attempts. Dominican finished with a team hitting percentage of .069, which is the second-lowest percentage by a Cougar opponent this season. For the eighth time this season, the Cougars had seven or more aces in a match. Azusa Pacific finished with 10 block assists, which marks the 10th time the Cougars have reached double figures in that category this season. All 10 of the Cougars' victories have been in straight-set fashion.
