HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Azusa Pacific visited PacWest leader Chaminade on Friday evening, and it was the Silverswords that claimed a straight-set victory. The loss drops the Cougars' record to 13-12 overall, and 9-7 in PacWest play.
Annaka Jorgenson led the Cougars in kills (8) and digs (10), Aubrea Banfield finished with 13 assists, while Kyra Palmbush and Kendyl Macaskill each had four block assists.
How It Happened: Chaminade seized control of the match early, winning both of the first two sets by an identical 25-14 score. In the first set, the Silverswords' success was due in large part to seven service aces, which is the most aces by any Cougar opponent in a single set this season. In the second set, Chaminade held a slim lead at 12-11, but the Silverswords would secure the set by taking 13 of the next 16 points to give the hosts the 2-0 match advantage.
Seeking to extend the match, the Cougars were able to battle throughout the opening portion of the third set. While Chaminade had pushed to a 13-8 advantage, Azusa Pacific would respond, eventually tying the set at 16-16, and then again at 18-18 and 19-19. A service error by the Cougars made it 20-19 in favor of Chaminade, and then an attack error by the Cougars on the ensuing point put Chaminade up 21-19, which was a lead that the Silverswords would not surrender, with the home team eventually sealing the match with a 25-222 third set triumph.
By the Numbers: Azusa Pacific finished the match with a team hitting percentage of .074, which is the Cougars' lowest number of the season. Chaminade finished the match with 13 service aces, which resulted in 13 reception errors for the Cougars, which is a team-high this season for Azusa Pacific. The Silverswords have now won four consecutive matches against the Cougars. Chaminade sits atop the PacWest standings with a 14-1 conference mark, and a 19-7 overall record.
