Defense Holds

Azusa Pacific dominated possession, unable to unlock Chaminade’s defense in a 0-0 draw.

AZUSA, Calif. -  Azusa Pacific and Chaminade played to a scoreless draw on Saturday evening, which now gives the Cougars a 6-3-4 overall record, and a conference mark of 3-1-2. This season, Chaminade has developed a reputation for playing on the counter attack and holding numbers behind the ball, and that is exactly what the Silverswords did on Saturday.

"I am really proud of the way the girls trained for this game and our young girls have really improved and no longer look like freshmen… Tonight was a tough match against a really good side," added Coach Lincoln after the draw.

How It Happened: Just two changes at the weekend from the previous starting XI for the home team. The Cougars started off like they just came off a win against their rivals, with a lot of energy and holding the majority of the ball. The Silverswords perhaps surprised with the pressing of the Cougars team and were forced into their back third for the first fifteen minutes. The Silverswords barely got to see the ball outside of their own half as the Cougars were adamant in holding the ball.

The Cougars showed their strengths wide with great runs by Katie O'Brien, Aubrey Dunaway and Alexis Fuller. However, timing was an issue for the Cougars in the attack, as the Silverswords drew Azusa Pacific offside four times in the first 19 minutes.

The first big chance came in the 22nd minute for the home team, when defender Mackenzie Coleman beat the goalkeeper of Chaminade but her left footed effort hit the side netting. The Cougars looked up to the task in finding the opening goal as another great look was presented late in the half, but Ruby Fernandez' shot just missed the top right corner.

To open the second half, the Cougars continued to try and attack the flanks of Chaminade. Sending its fullbacks forward, Azusa Pacific took a different shape in formation in the later parts of the match.

Leading all Cougars was Bethany Tee's four shots, with three being on goal.

"We pushed that last 15 minutes to find the goal and change formation, but I am really proud of our girls and we need more of the same going forward," expressed Coach Lincoln.

Looking Ahead: Cougars have two final home games to play on Wednesday Oct. 26th, and Saturday Oct. 29th against #9 Hawaii Hilo, which will be Senior Night for the Cougars.
