SAN DIEGO, CALIF - Azusa Pacific traveled down to San Diego on Saturday afternoon to face #16 ranked Point Loma in a tough conference battle. After 90 minutes of play, the Cougars fell to the Sea Lions by a final score of 2-0. The loss moves Azusa Pacific to a 5-3-3 overall record and a 2-1-1 PacWest record, landing at fifth overall in conference standings.Â
How it Happened - The Cougars attacked early as they collected four shots on goal and two corner kicks before Point Loma tabbed their first shot of the game. Avery Guiel and Katie Prado recorded back-to-back shots in the 13th and 15th minute, but the Cougars could not capitalize. Prado saw another opportunity in the 18th, but Point Loma's keeper was able to come up with the save, and Mackenzie Coleman had an attempt in the 25th, but the Sea Lions were able to keep the Cougars at bay once again. In the 41st minute, it was Point Loma who got ahead early scoring the first goal of the game to take a 1-0 advantage.Â
Point Loma found themselves on their attacking half early in the second, but a shot on goal in the 50th minute was saved by Maddie Williams. The Sea Lions kept pressing and eventually put the ball between the posts in the 63rd to double their advantage against the Cougars. Azusa Pacific kept their fight alive on the pitch as they recorded seven more shots in the half, but nothing was able to come from it, falling to Point Loma by a final score of 2-0.Â
By the Numbers: The Cougars and Sea Lions matched up fairly even throughout the match, with Azusa Pacific having 14 shots with six on goal, and Point Loma collecting 13 shots with five on goal. Azusa Pacific also had six corner kicks compared to Point Loma's three. Prado collected a season-high three shots on goal, and head coach Brooke Lincoln utilized 18 different players on the pitch today.Â
