AZUSA, Calif. -- The Cougar volleyball team wrapped up a 4-0 weekend with a four-set victory over Westminster College (25-20, 25-12, 23-25, 25-11) inside the Felix Event Center Saturday afternoon. Annaka Jorgenson led the way with a career-high 26 kills in the victory, which ties for the most by a Cougar in the NCAA era (2012-present).
How It Happened: Azusa Pacific never trailed in the opening set, spreading the attacks around as they built a small advantage that held up. Abby Hills would be the leader with five of the team's 16 kills in the opening set as the home team led by as many as seven points before holding on for a 25-20 margin.
The second set was where Jorgenson took over the match. The Cougars repeatedly fed chances to their sophomore outside hitter, and she responded with 10 kills on 20 chances in the set, including seven during a set-clinching 11-1 run that put Azusa Pacific up two sets to none.
The third set was a much closer affair with Westminster holding a small lead for much of the set. Jorgenson added another eight kills in the set as the Cougars would rally to tie the set at 22-all, but Lydia Miller had three kills in a four-play stretch for the Griffins before a service error denied the Cougars a sweep.
Azusa Pacific would lead wire-to-wire in the final set, opening the frame with a 6-1 run and never letting up. Westminster would only be able to win one point on their serve the entire set. Jorgenson would have five kills in the set to reach her final total of 26 while Lindsi Hawkins would finish the match off with her second kill of the match.
By the Numbers: Jorgenson tied the single-match kill mark of Mattie Shelford, who accomplished the feat in a five-set win against Cal State Monterey Bay in September 2014. The Cougars hit .363 as a team for the match, with Abby Hills joining Jorgenson in double figures with 12. Bailey Hennington had a team-high 22 digs, while Katarina Radisic added 21 to go with seven kills and three aces. Kyra Palmbush and Kaitlin Craig were each involved in four of the Cougars' six blocks. Sophomore Ioanna Georgatzi had a career-high six kills. Katie Jacox had 14 kills and 11 digs for the Griffins.
Up Next: Azusa Pacific (5-3) heads into conference play next, beginning the 20-game PacWest schedule at home against Academy of Art. First serve in the Felix Event Center is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
