Second Half Surge in San Bernardino

Azusa Pacific women's soccer use two second-half goals to defeat Cal State San Bernardino 2-0 in the desert heat Saturday afternoon.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Azusa Pacific women's soccer followed up its impressive win over Cal Poly Pomona Thursday night by defeating another CCAA opponent in Cal State San Bernardino by a final score of 2-0. After a scoreless first half, the Cougars put two in the back of the net to leave no doubt in the second half. Senior forward Randi Macadangdang scored her team-high third goal of the season to give Azusa Pacific the lead, before Bethany Tee tallied her first of the season just four minutes later. With the victory, Azusa Pacific improves to 3-1 in nonconference action so far this season.

"I'm really proud of the girls today," coach Brooke Lincoln said after the win, "We knew this would be a tough road match for us. San Bernardino sat in a low block the first half and we had a hard time breaking it down."

The Cougars and Coyotes each had chances to score in the first half, but it was Azusa Pacific's adjustments at the break that propelled the Cougars into the driver's seat.

"We talked about two ways to unlock them at the half and the girls came out and unlocked them right away," Lincoln said. The breakthrough came just over three minutes into the second half as Macadangdang broke the deadlock with her third goal of the season which was set up by freshman Kylie Carwitz.

The Cougars kept applying the pressure directly after as Tee had a shot saved by Cal State San Bernardino goalkeeper Carly Luna in the  52nd minute. Tee would capitilze on her next opportunity however less than a minute later, scoring her first goal of the season for the Cougars to put them up 2-0. Maddy Morrison was the one that set up Tee for her first assist of the season and fifth point after her brace in the 3-2 Cal Poly Pomona win Thursday evening.

Azusa Pacific had 14 substitutes play in this game, totaling 25 total girls that saw action this afternoon while the Cougars had nine substitutes in Thursday's match as well. The Cougars will need their depth as they still have three more nonconference battles with CCAA opponents before starting the PacWest portion of the schedule.

"We were also able to get a lot of players time today and with a long season it's important to have a deep bench," Lincoln said, "We had a lot of players come in off the bench and get quality minutes (and) overall (I'm) just really proud of the steps forward this team keeps taking."

Azusa Pacific improved its record to 3-1-0 on the season with two wins over CCAA opponents this week and look forward to facing three more in the coming weeks.
