LA MIRADA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific dropped both games of a doubleheader at Biola on Saturday, falling 5-1 in game one, followed by a 2-0 defeat.
Game 1: Biola 5, Azusa Pacific 1
All of Biola's offensive damage was done in the second inning, starting the frame off with a leadoff home run. The Eagles would take advantage of a pair of errors, eventually loading the bases with two out and plating four runs on back-to-back singles. The Cougars had had runners at second and third base with one out in the top half of the inning, but had been unable to bring either runner home. Azusa Pacific would scratch its lone run of the game in the sixth, as
Aly Montesino drove in
Amanda Woods with a sacrifice fly. The Cougars would threaten in the seventh, loading the bases and bringing the tying run to the plate, but Biola was able to turn a double play to finish off the game.Â
Liz Phillips threw four shutout innings for the second time in as many days, while
Becca Jewett had two of the Cougars' three hits in the game.
Game 2: Biola 2, Azusa Pacific 0
The Eagles struck early in game two, scoring their first run in the bottom of the first inning on a one-out squeeze bunt. An insurance run would be added in the fourth inning via an RBI groundout. While that was all that Montesino would allow in the circle, it was all the Eagles would need to put the finishing touches on the sweep, as the Cougars were once again only able to muster three hits of their own.Â
Dani Burghardt had two of those three hits, but the Cougars' best chance to score was snuffed out in the fourth by a strikeout with runners at second and third.
Inside the Numbers: With today's sweep, the Eagles win the season series from Azusa Pacific, seven games to five. Jewett went 1-3 in game two, giving her a five-game hit streak. Montesino's RBI in game one ties her with Jewett for the team lead on the season with 27.
Up Next: Azusa Pacific (17-13, 6-12 PacWest Southern California pod) has six games remaining this season, all against Concordia. The first pair of those games will take place Tuesday in Irvine, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
