Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cold Spell

Azusa Pacific men's basketball falls on the road to Point Loma 85-65.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — In its first contest against PacWest opponent Point Loma this season, Azusa Pacific was unable to conquer its shooting woes in the second half, falling 85-65 in Golden Gym Friday night. The Cougars were led by Mandrell Worthy (24), Bryce Sloan (12), and Terrence Becvar (11).

How it Happened: Azusa Pacific jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game and Worthy scored eight of the 10 Cougar points in the first three minutes. Point Loma then induced a 20-5 scoring run over the next five minutes including shooting 4-for-7 from beyond the arc during that stretch. The Sea Lions offense did not slow down, knocking down over 50% of their shots from the field in the first half which included nine made threes. Point Loma led for the majority of the opening half despite the Cougars shooting 16-of-34 from the field and five-of-11 from downtown. With a 47-39 advantage at the break, Point Loma jumped out of the gate in the second half to an 8-0 scoring run that almost doubled their lead in the first two-and-a-half minutes of second-half play. From there, the Sea Lions kept their double-digit lead for the rest of the way as the Cougars shot just 30% from the field in the second half.

Turning Point: Azusa Pacific went 0-for-14 from the three-point range in the second half, while Point Loma made seven on 14 attempts. The Sea Lions shot 48.5% from beyond the arc and tied a season-high with 16 made three-pointers.

Up Next: The Cougars (5-6, 4-5 PacWest Southern California pod) will now face Point Loma again on their home floor at the Felix Event Center, Saturday, February 27. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
