AZUSA, Calif. — After clinching the PacWest for the third consecutive season with a 3-2 overtime win over rival Biola last Saturday, Azusa Pacific men's soccer earned the No. 3 seed in Super Region 4 in the DII NCAA Tournament. The Cougars will host the No. 6 seed West Texas A&M in the second round of the tournament this upcoming Saturday, November 20th. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
This will be the first time in the two program's history they have faced off, but will not be the first time West Texas A&M has played at the Cougar Soccer Complex. The Buffaloes played a pair of games against other opponents going 1-1 which included an overtime win over Colorado Mesa back in the 2018 postseason.
This will be the third season in a row the Cougars have made the NCAA Tournament and also the third year they have hosted a playoff game. Starting in 2018, Azusa Pacific defeated Cal State LA 2-1 in an overtime thriller that saw Gabriel Costa score the golden goal to defeat the Golden Eagles in what was the second round of the tournament. The Cougars run came to an end however as Cal Poly Pomona defeated the Cougars just five days later who would eventually beat West Texas A&M in the regional final to advance to the semi-finals of the NCAA Tournament that season.
In 2019, the Cougars went through the entire regular season with an impressive 18-0 record that saw them earn the No. 1 seed in their super region. In the second round of the tournament, Azusa Pacific was upset by Colorado School of Mines 2-1 suffering their first loss of the season.
