AZUSA, Calif. — Azusa Pacific men's soccer saw four different players score goals in its dominant 4-0 win over Dominican Saturday afternoon. The Cougars ended the unbeaten streak of the Penguins and stayed atop the table in the PacWest picking up three more points.
Gregoire Diep scored the game's first goal on a free kick before
Marco Astorga,
Daniel Osei-tutu, and
David Kwinn each got in on the action. Diep and Astorga's goals came in the first 45 minutes before Osei-tutu's first goal of the season, and the game's final goal from Kwinn came in the second half. It was the team's second clean sheet win this week after an impressive 3-0 win over Holy Names on Thursday.
How it Happened: Through the first 20 minutes of action, neither team created a quality chance to score as the Cougars slowly asserted their possession style of play upon the Penguins. The patient attack paid off for Azusa Pacific as they were rewarded with a free kick just outside of the 18-yard box. Diep, who has scored on many free kicks in his collegiate career, including an overtime game-winner versus Cal State San Bernardino earlier this year, stepped up and found the bottom corner with his dipping strike to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
Azusa Pacific continued to maintain majority of the possession throughout the first half before they broke through again in the 39th minute. After a scrum in the box, Astorga put the ball on the floor sliding it past defenders and the goalkeeper into the bottom corner for the goal. It was the true freshman's third goal in the last four games, he's now second on the team in points with 11.
In the second 45 minutes, the Cougars kept their foot on the gas as Osei-tutu got on the scoring sheet with a beautiful solo goal. After receiving the ball from Kwinn in the midfield, Osei-tutu dribbled past four or five defenders before picking out the bottom corner to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead. It was the fourth career goal and first of the season for the sophomore midfielder who's started every game for the Cougars this season.
To wrap things up, Kwinn would put the icing on the cake with his team-high sixth goal of the season after an incredible team build-up. Osei-tutu and
James Ndubueze played a great give-and-go to get past the Penguins midfield to start the play before Osei-tutu drove at the central defender and laid it off for Astorga. The freshman then split the Dominican defense with a through ball to Kwinn who flicked the ball into the side netting with the outside of his right foot to cap off the win in style.Â
By the Numbers: The Cougars recorded another clean sheet to up their tally to seven on the season thus far as goalkeeper
Leo Moreno picked up his fourth. Moreno made a couple of fine saves to keep the Penguins off the board on his way to his second consecutive clean sheet of the week.
Orlando Lozano and
Fritz Oestreicher each played more than 80 minutes in the game and were essential parts to the shutout in central defense. Astorga now has a goal and an assist in three of the previous four games and has started six games in a row. His nine points in the last four games is the one more than Kwinn who has now scored three goals in the last two games.
