SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- For the second consecutive match, a Bailey Henington record-breaking night was among the highlights of a Cougar victory. In Azusa Pacific's 3-1 road win at Point Loma on Friday evening, Henington tallied 23 digs and now has a career-total of 2,354, which puts her atop the all-time list in PacWest conference history. Last Friday, in a road win at Fresno Pacific, Henington became Azusa Pacific's all-time leader in career digs.
The 3-1 victory makes the record-setting performance all the more sweeter, as Azusa Pacific improves to 13-4 overall and 8-1 in PacWest play. Annaka Jorgenson and Kyra Palmbush each delivered huge performances for the Cougars, with Jorgenson finishing with 16 kills and a .371 hitting percentage, while Palmbush recorded 14 kills and a .438 hitting percentage. Over 32 attempts, Palmbush did not have an attack error. Maggie Nielsen dished out 24 assists over the four sets. In addition to Henington's 23 digs, the Cougars were led defensively by 12 digs from Jorgenson and two solo blocks from Delaney Dunham.
How it Happened: It was Point Loma who opened the match with momentum, scoring the first five points of the evening and maintaining the lead throughout the first set. The Sea Lions went up 1-0 in the match with a 25-19 first set win.
With the score tied 6-6 in the second set, Azusa Pacific was able to take six of the next seven points to obtain a 12-7 lead. While Point Loma would score the next three points unanswered to pull within two at 12-10, the Cougar lead would shrink no smaller, and the visitors eventually evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-21 second set victory. In the second set, Azusa Pacific had a team hitting percentage of .333 with just one attack error, while Point Loma committed eight attack errors.
The Cougars were able to grab control of the match in the third set, claiming a commanding 25-11 win. In the frame, Azusa Pacific recorded 16 kills on 32 attempts, committing just one attack error for a game-high hitting percentage of .469, which is the team's highest hitting percentage for any single set this season. Defensively, the Cougars combined for 20 digs. The largest lead of the set came at 23-8 on a Jorgenson kill.
Azusa Pacific closed out the match with a 25-17 fourth set win. The Cougars were able to take a quick 2-0 lead on back-to-back attack errors from the Sea Lions, and Point Loma would not gain the lead at any point in the fourth. While the set was tied at 7-7, Azusa Pacific was able to deal the final blow by scoring seven of the next eight points to surge ahead 14-8. Point Loma trimmed its deficit down to 15-12, but the Cougars scored seven out of eight points once again to push the advantage up to 22-13. With the score 23-17, a Palmbush kill gave the Cougars match point at 24-17, and a Sea Lion ball handling error sealed the hosts' fate.
By the Numbers: The Cougars finished the match with just eight attack errors, which is the fewest Azusa Pacific has committed in a match this season. In the service game, the Cougars had six service aces, which is the second-most they have registered this season. Azusa Pacific is now 4-1 in matches that have gone four sets, and the Cougars have had a team hitting percentage of .315 or better on three of those occasions.
Quotable: "Point Loma is always a challenging place to play. They tend to have great crowds, and their team usually feeds off of that. Tonight, we did a great job of responding after that first set and elevating our level of play. This was an important win for us, and I am proud of the effort and energy that we played with," - Head Coach Chris Keife
Up Next: The Cougars, who are in the midst of six consecutive road matches, will close out the stretch with a match at Dominican on Wednesday, Oct. 20, followed by a visit to Holy Names the following day (Thursday, Oct. 21). Azusa Pacific is 4-0 through its first four road matches in PacWest play.
