Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Joel Simeone

Four-Wheel Drive

Azusa Pacific women's soccer snap two-game skid with a 4-1 win over Holy Names.

AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific's women's soccer team got back to their winning ways, earning a 4-1 victory over the Holy Names Hawks Thursday evening at the Cougar Soccer Complex.  Maddy Morrison led the way offensively, scoring a pair of goals, once in each half.

How it Happened:  The Cougars struck first midway through the first half.  Katie Prado fired a shot from just outside the top of the box that was stopped by Holy Names keeper Abigail Burnell, but the rebound fell to Morrison, who fired a blast into the left side of the net for her fourth goal of the year.  Azusa Pacific would continue to pepper the Hawks' net with 13 shots in the first half, but the lead remained 1-0 going into halftime.

Azusa Pacific continued to threaten, and their pressure would finally pay dividends just past the hour mark.  Coming off a corner kick, the ball fell to Kayla Grisham, whose attempted shot was deflected to the feet of Randi Macadangdang at the right hand corner of the six-yard box.  The senior forward slotted the ball into the net for her team-leading fifth goal, doubling the Cougars' advantage.

Just a few minutes later, Morrison would again tie Macadangdang for the team scoring lead as Sydney Gilkerson got the ball at midfield and sent Morrison sprinting to the top of the box, again beating the keeper and tucking the ball inside the left post for a 3-0 lead.  Holy Names would get on the board in the 78th minute via a strike into the upper right-hand corner from Abbi Alexander, but the Cougars would finish off the scoring on the last kick of the ball.  With the clock ticking down, Kylie Carwitz started one last counterattack, chipping the ball over the defense where Bethany Tee would run onto it and beat the buzzer for her second of the season.

By the Numbers:  The Cougars set season highs with 30 shot attempts in the game and 16 on target.  The defense limited Holy Names to just five shots and one shot on goal.  Azusa Pacific had seven corner kicks in the contest.  The Cougars remain perfect against Holy Names with the win, coming out victorious in all 11 meetings between the schools, outscoring the Hawks in the process by a margin of 38-2.  Counting tonight's score, four of Macadangdang's five goals this season have been game-winners.  For the ninth time this season, the Cougars employed a timeshare in net.  Bella Hara played the first 45 minutes in goal for the Cougars and did not face a shot on goal, while Maddie Williams played the second half.  In all, 26 different players saw game time for Azusa Pacific in the win.

Up Next:  Azusa Pacific (8-4, 3-2 PacWest) continues their five-match home stand when they take on Dominican on Saturday.  Opening kickoff at the Cougar Soccer Complex is scheduled for 12:00 noon.
