COLUMBUS, Georgia – Azusa Pacific closed out its road trip with a 4-3 win over Flagler College on Saturday.
In doubles, the Cougars took the point with wins in both the #1 and #2 matches. Courtney Page and Jacky Wagner teamed up at #1, and they claimed a 6-2 win. April Wong and Anna Savchenko secured the point, winning 6-3. Petra Ivankovic and Audrey Stewart were locked in a battle at 5-5, but a Cougar injury forced the #3 match to end and Flagler avoided a clean sweep in doubles.
While Azusa Pacific was able to take the 1-0 contest lead after doubles, the singles portion of the day was a back-and-forth affair that required a match-clinching third set victory by Wong at #4 to secure the win. To open singles, Flagler tied the contest up at 1-1 with a two-set victory in the #5 spot. The Cougars took the lead back at 2-1, after Ivankovic defeated Eden Schlagenhauf in the #1 match. While Ivankovic had to battle to take set one at 7-5, she made quick work of Schlagenhauf in the second set, winning 6-0. Once again, Flagler evened the overall score at 2-2, as Lixin Wang beat Savchenko at #2. Azusa Pacific grabbed a 3-2 lead when Katia Betancourt came through with a two-set victory (6-2, 6-4) in the #6 spot. After Flagler tied the contest at 3-3 with a win at #3, all eyes turned to the #4 matchup, where Wong and Amelie Vossgaetter battled for the deciding point.
Wong opened the match with a 6-4 win in the first set, but Vossgaetter bounced back in set two and claimed her own 6-4 victory. With the entire match on the line, Wong came through for the Cougars and secured a 6-4 third set victory that gave Azusa Pacific its sixth win of the season.
Azusa Pacific is now 6-2 this season, and the Cougars are set to begin a stretch of 10 straight home matches. The Cougars begin the homestand on Thursday, March 12 at 2:30 pm, when UC San Diego visits.
