AZUSA, Calif. – It was a night that began with a celebration of four outstanding seniors who played their final regular season home game in the Felix Event Center, and it ended with the Cougars walking away with a dominating 98-69 win over Academy of Art on Thursday evening.
Seniors
Noah Bundrant,
Selom Mawugbe,
Jake Spurgeon and
Ben Taufahema were honored with a pre-game ceremony, and the quartet combined for 49 points in the contest to help lead the way. Spurgeon scored a game-high 19 points, Mawugbe recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, Bundrant scored in double-figures with 11 points while also tallying six rebounds, three steals and two assists, and Taufahema scored seven points and posted three assists.
Azusa Pacific also received significant contributions from the supporting cast, led by a 16-point performance by
Terrence Becvar. In addition to his scoring, Becvar had four assists, four rebounds and four blocks. For the third time in the last four games,
Ken West scored in double-figures as he finished with 11 points.
While the game remained close through the majority of the first half, Azusa Pacific took a 37-26 lead with 2:14 remaining in the first half, and it was the last time in which Academy of Art was within single digits. The Cougars extended their lead to 20 points at 79-59 at the 6:13 mark in the second half, and the advantage would not fall below 20 points over the remainder of the contest. Azusa Pacific's largest lead of the game came on a three-pointer from
Joey Walsh on the Cougars' final possession, as he knocked down the triple to make it 98-69 with a little under 30 seconds remaining.
Overall, Azusa Pacific shot 53% (36-for-66) from the floor, and 40% from three (15-for-38). The Cougars shared the ball all night, assisting on 24 of their 35 made field goals. 11 different Cougars had an assist in the game, and
Brennan Rymer led the team with five. Defensively, the Cougars held the Urban Knights to 40% (23-for-58) shooting overall, and forced them into 17 turnovers. The biggest contrast in the final box score between the two sides was bench points, as Azusa Pacific tallied 46 points via its reserves, while Academy of Art scored just 14 points.
While the evening served as the final regular season home game for the four seniors, the Cougars are guaranteed at least one more game in the Felix Event Center. Azusa Pacific will host the 2020 PacWest Tournament March 5-7, and the Cougars need just one more victory to clinch the PacWest championship and top-seed in the tournament, and they will have three opportunities to do just that, as they hit the road to take on Dominican (Sat, Feb. 22), Holy Names (Mon, Feb. 24), and Concordia (Sat, Feb. 29) to close out the regular season.
