AZUSA, Calif. – The Azusa Pacific women's basketball team closed out their home schedule with an outstanding shooting exhibition in a 92-62 win over Academy of Art University Thursday evening at the Felix Event Center.
The scoring outburst started early, as the Cougars hit six three-pointers in the first quarter, sparking a 17-3 run that put the home team ahead 30-16 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the focus shifted to the defensive end, with the Cougars holding the Urban Knights to just 2-18 from the field and stretching the advantage to 23 points at intermission.
While the second half scoring was much more even, the Cougars continued to stay hot from outside, making a season-high 16 triples and shooting 44% from beyond the arc for the game. That fortune extended to the foul line, where the Cougars made all 14 of their attempts.
Playing in front of their home fans for the final time in the regular season, the Cougars' five seniors went out of their way to put on a show for their fans.
Savanna Hanson made a career-best 8 three-point shots, leading all scorers in the game with 26 points and 6 rebounds. Her sister,
Daylee Hanson, not wanting to be outdone, had a double-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists, including making all 10 of her free throw attempts.
Getting to start in her final home game,
Rachel Bozlee came out firing in the second half, burying back-to-back threes as part of her 14 points.
Zoe March was her usual efficient self at the point, chipping in 12 points, 7 assists, and 3 steals. And
Cierra Roufosse did a little bit of everything, finishing with 6 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improved their mark on the season to 21-4, 15-4 in conference play. The Cougars, who were ranked sixth in the first set of regional rankings on Wednesday, have three more games during the regular season to try to improve their position before hosting the PacWest tournament. With a win in any of their final three games, they would clinch the second seed in that conference tournament, and with it, a bye directly into the semifinals.
