2020 PCSC Championships Recap

Azusa Pacific finished fourth at the 2020 PCSC Championships.

WED, FEB. 12: DAY ONE || RESULTS
MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – Azusa Pacific opened up competition at the 2020 Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Championships with a pair of individual titles on Wednesday.
 
Hannah Frey finished first in the 1000 meters and Amy Crayne won the one-meter dive competition during the first day of action at East Los Angeles College. Frey won the 1000 meters race with a career best time of 10:15.08, and Crayne turned in her best performance of the season by posting a score of 290.35 in the finals.
 
Azusa Pacific was dominant in the one-meter dive competition, as the Cougars claimed first, second, fourth and fifth. Melia Stout was the second place finisher (274.90), while McKenna Webster was fourth (231.00) and Briana Medvecki finished fifth (228.50).
 
"The divers were strong and consistent," said diving coach Cindy Adams, "Amy (Crayne) put together a season best performance to take first place!"
 
THU, FEB. 13: DAY TWO || RESULTS
MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – The Cougars were back in action on Thursday, competing on the second day of the 2020 PCSC Championships at East Los Angeles College.
 
In the first finals event of the day, Hannah Frey turned in a fourth place finish in the 500 freestyle, swimming a season best time of 5:01.71 and earning 26 points for Azusa Pacific. Riley Smith scored another 17 points for the Cougars in the event, as she finished 10th with a time of 5:05.72. Earlier in the day, Delanie Gearing turned in a personal best swim in the prelims of the 500 free, posting a time of 5:11.78.
 
Amanda Anderson scored 24 points for the Cougars in the 200 IM, finishing sixth with a finals time of 2:07.05. In the prelims of the 200 IM, Tessie Scavone swam a personal best time of 2:10.38. Scavone followed up the performance by scoring 15 points in the finals for the Cougars, finishing in 12th place with a time of 2:10.51.
 
The day wrapped up with the 200 freestyle relay, in which Azusa Pacific placed seventh. Frey, Smith, Sydney Benveniste, and Emily Rigsby combined to finish in a time of 1:38.81, earning 46 points for the Cougars in the event.
 
Head coach Tim Kyle is pleased with the way his team has performed through the first two days, "It was another strong day of racing for us! We are focused and competing well, I am looking forward to what the next two days bring for our team!"
 
Heading into day three, Azusa Pacific is third overall with a total of 408 points. The Cougars will be right back at it on Friday, for the third of four days at the Championships being held at East Los Angeles College.
 
FRI, FEB. 14: DAY THREE || RESULTS
MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – For the third consecutive day, Azusa Pacific swim & dive rose to the occasion at the PCSC Championships as the Cougars performed at a high level in multiple events.

On day one, the one-meter dive was dominated by the Cougars, with Amy Crayne winning the event with a score of 290.35, Melia Stout placing second, McKenna Webster posting a fourth-place finish, and Briana Medvicki finishing fifth overall. On Friday, the Cougar diving team continued to show its excellence at the conference championships, placing first, second, and third on the three-meter board. 

Crayne won her second title of the week, placing first with a score of 277.60 during Friday's finals. McKenna Webster scored a 269.15 to finish in second place, and Melia Stout put up a score of 267.55 that gave her third place and secured the podium sweep for Azusa Pacific. In the first swimming event of the day, Emily Rigsby placed fifth in the 100 fly with a time of 57.20. Right behind Rigsby was teammate Sydney Benveniste, who finished sixth and swam a time of 57.59. In the 400 IM, Amanda Anderson finished fourth, swimming a time of 4:29.39. Earlier in the day, Anderson had posted an NCAA Division II B-cut time during the prelims, with a time of 4:30.03. Holly Williams turned in a big performance for Azusa Pacific in the 100 breaststroke, finishing third overall with a finals time of 1:05.75.

The PCSC Championships wrap on on Saturday, bringing to a close four days of competition. Entering the fourth and final day, the Cougars are currently third overall in the team standings with 747 points.
 
SAT, FEB. 15: DAY FOUR || RESULTS
MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – Azusa Pacific wrapped up the 2020 PCSC Championships on Saturday, and the Cougars had four top-three finishers on day four.

Hannah Frey was the first Cougar on the podium, as she finished second in the 1650 freestyle. Frey claimed the silver medal with a time of 17:20.34. The next Cougar on the podium was Amanda Anderson, following her performance in the 200 breaststroke. Anderson touched the wall in 2:21.20, which was fast enough to place second and also receive a silver medal. Azusa Pacific nearly took the bronze as well, as Delanie Gearing finished fourth with a time of 2:22.31, which was .04 behind the third place finisher. In the 200 butterfly, Azusa Pacific picked up two more medals. Sydney Benveniste placed second, swimming a time of 2:05.58, and Emily Rigsby was right behind her in third place, posting a time of 2:06.15.

Frey, Anderson, and Benveniste each earned 28 points for Azusa Pacific with their second place finishes, Rigsby picked up 27 points for her third place finish, and Gearing added 26 points with the fourth place finish. Other Cougars who scored points in the meet: 400 free relay team (Smith/Scavone/Frey/Rigsby, 50 points, 5th), Holly Williams (200 breast, 23 points, 7th place), Tessie Scavone (200 fly, 23 points, 7th place), Sam Escalante (200 fly, 13 points, 14th place), Riley Smith (100 free, 12 points, 15th place), Sarah Eichhorn (1650 free, 7 points, 18th place), and Naomi Vaughn (200 fly, 5 points, 20th place).

Azusa Pacific finished in fourth place, as the Cougars scored 1,017 points on the entire weekend.
