AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific raced by visiting Concordia on Thursday evening in front of a raucous crowd, with the Cougars taking a 95-62 win. Concordia entered the contest undefeated in PacWest play.
Brennan Rymer led the Cougar offensive attack. He finished with a double-double by way of 18 points and 11 assists. Joining Rymer in double figure scoring was
Selom Mawugbe (16),
Noah Bundrant (12) and
Jake Spurgeon (12). Of Mawugbe's 16 points, eight points came by way of his four dunks in the game. Azusa Pacific had eight players finish with eight or more points. Spurgeon hauled in a team-high nine rebounds in the win. Defensively,
Ben Avera tallied three steals, and
Selom Mawugbe finished with two blocks.
The Cougars took control of the momentum right out of the gates. Azusa Pacific opened the contest by jumping out to a 17-2 lead through the first five minutes of action. Concordia would hold the Cougars scoreless for the next three minutes, which allowed the Eagles to cut the deficit down to single digits at 17-9 with 12:10 left before halftime. It would be the final time in which Concordia was within single digits. On the ensuing Cougar possession,
Ken West made a layup that gave Azusa Pacific a 19-9 lead and a double digit cushion for the remainder of the contest.
Coming out of the halftime locker room, the Cougars held a 42-30 lead. Azusa Pacific would slowly extended its lead over the final 20 minutes of action. With a little under six minutes remaining in the contest,
Ben Avera hit a three-pointer to push the lead up to 28 points. Concordia would not draw any closer than 28 points over the rest of the game.
Azusa Pacific finished the game shooting 69% (37-for-54) and 58% (11-for-19) from beyond-the-arc. The Cougars assisted on 27 of their 37 made field goals, with six players tallying two or more assists in the game. "Our assist number tonight is a reflection of the work and preparation we did all week," said head coach
Peter Bond, "Concordia is a team that forces a lot of mistakes and miscues, but if you stay disciplined and solid, there are a lot of opportunities to create for others. We did an excellent job of finding one another. Brennan (Rymer) especially stepped up and made play after play."
Defensively, the Cougars put together two halves of suffocating defense. Through the first 20 minutes of action, Azusa Pacific limited Concordia to 35% (11-for-32) shooting and 28% (3-for-11) from three, followed by 31% (8-for-36) from the floor and 14% from deep (1-for-7) in the second half.
Azusa Pacific is now 12-3 overall, and 7-2 in PacWest play. The Cougars will now turn their attention towards two home games in the Felix Event Center this week, beginning with a matchup against Hawai'i Hilo on Thursday, January 16 at 7:30 pm. Then, Azusa Pacific and Biola meet on Saturday, January 18 at 7:30 pm for the first installment of the Cornerstone Cup on the hardwood. The Cougars currently lead the Cornerstone Cup 30-20.
