SAN MARCOS, Calif.-- Azusa Pacific split its two matches on the second day of the Cougar Classic, as the Cougars finished the weekend with a 3-1 record to start the season.
Senior middle blocker
Julianne Miller finished the weekend with 10 total blocks, as she moved into third all-time in the PacWest in blocks with 360 in her career. The PacWest career record is 394.
All-Tournament Team: Three Cougars were named to the All-Tournament team, as Miller received the recognition along with freshman
Annaka Jorgenson and senior
Bailey Henington.
Game 1: Azusa Pacific 0, Cal State San Marcos 3 (25-22, 25-23, 25-17)
In the first set, the Cougars needed a late surge to pick up an early lead from Cal State San Marcos. The opposing Cougars led 21-15 when
Aliyah Morrison put down a kill (assisted by junior
Mina Andjelkovic) to send Azusa Pacific on a five-point run, closing the score 21-20. Cal Sate San Marcos then finished off the set with a kill from Micah Hebert to secure the match lead.
The second set was a mirror image of the first as Azusa Pacific battled the entire competition down to the wire but couldn't secure the victory, ending in a hard fought 25-23 loss. A big Cal State San Marcos run (22-14) in the middle of the third set gave the opposing Cougars a solid lead and an eventual 25-17 win to close out the match.
Miller led Azusa Pacific with nine kills to go along with four total blocks in the game. Also leading for Azusa Pacific was senior
Sara Wagenveld with 9 kills and two blocks while Jorgenson added 6 kills for the Cougars.
Game 2: Azusa Pacific 3, Saint Martin's 0 (25-7, 25-9, 25-18)
Saint Martin's scored the first point of the first set, taking a 1-0 lead, but the Cougars never trailed again in the match enroute to a 3-0 sweep.
Jorgenson led Azusa Pacific with nine kills, seven digs, and two blocks. The Cougars also received strong performances from freshman
Katarina Radisic, who had eight kills, while Andjelkovic tallied 14 assists, five kills, four digs, and a block.

Following the weekend, Azusa Pacific is 3-1 on the new season. Up next for the Cougars is the West Region Showcase, hosted by Cal State L.A. The Cougars will play four games over the two-day showcase, beginning with Central Washington on Friday, September 13 at 2:30 p.m. before matching up against the host team Cal State L.A. later on that night at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, Azusa Pacific will play Alaska Fairbanks at 2:30 p.m., and Cal State East Bay at 7:30 p.m.
