AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific men's soccer secured its first victory of the 2019 season on Thursday night defeating Cal State Dominguez Hills by a final score of 4-0. Junior James Ndubueze stole the show with a hat trick while the Cougars attack dominated throughout, outshooting the Toros 20-5.
The first goal came from Ndubueze in the 15th minute off of a pass over the back line from Gregoire Diep. The rest of the scoring came in the second half. David Kwinn scored in the 55th minute to double the scoreline before Ndubueze completed his hat trick. His second goal was a header off of a short cross from Diep before Kwinn drew a penalty kick allowing Ndubueze to cap off the victory in style.
The Cougars leaned on their returning players in the game, especially on the attacking end. James Ndubueze, David Kwinn, and Grégoire Diep all played a part in the victory adding points in the game.
"We are always close, off the field and on the field. With Arturo, Grego and David at the front it's like we lost nobody and I love that fact," junior James Ndubueze said.Â
To go along with their veteran talent, the Cougars were able to see some new players get in on the action. Freshman Daniel Osei-Tutu started the game, played 38 minutes in the first half and recorded an assist. Making their Cougar debuts defensively were Orlando Lozano, Jessie Echeverria, and Leo Tomasi. Those three paired with returners Isaac Bawa, Justin Glaser, and Brendan Fix worked together to ensure the Cougars first shutout of the season.
"We have a lot of new players, so we have to find our chemistry but I think every single game we are getting better and better, we're getting closer and closer and the result will speak for itself," Ndubueze said.
Azusa Pacific will now turn their eyes towards Cal State San Marcos this Saturday, September 7 where they will make their 2019 season home debut. Kick off is set for 7:30pm at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
