Volleyball Closes Out Showcase With Two Wins

Azusa Pacific defeated Alaska and Cal State East Bay on the second day of the West Region Showcase

Los Angeles, Calif.-- The Azusa Pacific Volleyball team closed out day two of the West Regional Showcase Saturday afternoon by shutting out Alaska in a four set win 3-1 before closing out the day with a 3-1 victory over Cal State East Bay. Senior Bailey Henington was named to the All-Tournament team for her performance in the Cougars' four matches.

Game 1: Azusa Pacific 3, Alaska 1 (13-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-14)

It wasn't until the second set when Azusa Pacific showed strong play against Alaska after coming up short in the first. Both teams went back-and-forth with neither team taking a lead larger than three points for the majority of the second set. With the score tied at twenty-four, a block from Aliyah Morrison and Sara Wagenveld gave the Cougars a lead before Julianne Miller finished out the set with a kill to seal the win. Azusa Pacific maintained momentum into the third and fourth frames, and never trailed which ultimately lead to the Cougars sixth win of the season.

Azusa Pacific received solid performances from a collection of players. Wagenveld finished with 12 kills and four blocks while teammates Katarina Radisic and Annaka Jorgenson both tallied in 11 kills a piece. Defensively, Morrison added five blocks for the Cougars while Bailey Henington contributed 19 digs.

Game 2: Azusa Pacific 3, Cal State East Bay 1 (19-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-16)

The second match was a mirror image of the first as Cal State East Bay jumped out with an early first set win before Azusa Pacific answered back in the second set. The Cougars once again went on a 9-1 run midway in the second frame and never looked back as they cruised to their first set win on the match. Moving into the final sets, Azusa Pacific kept that same favor and ultimately combined for a 20-point margin to close out the weekend with a 3-1 victory over the Pioneers.
