BELMONT, Calif. – Azusa Pacific closed out a 10-game, five day road trip with their eand ighth ninth consecutive wins, as the Cougars swept Notre Dame de Namur in a doubleheader Tuesday. Azusa Pacific won game one by a 3-0 margin, and then took game two by a 12-3 score in a five inning game shortened due to the mercy rule.
Game One: Azusa Pacific 3, Notre Dame de Namur 0
The story of game one was junior
Kat Ung, as she threw a one-hit, complete game shutout to lead the Cougars to their sixth straight win. Ung took a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh inning, however, Notre Dame de Namur got a single from the second batter in the inning. Ung finished the game with a season-high 10 strikeouts.
The Cougar offense provided enough support for Ung, as the Cougars scored one run in the first, third, and sixth innings. In the first inning, Azusa Pacific took the quick 1-0 lead off of an Argonaut error that allowed a run to score. In the third, junior
Becca Jewett was able to bring home the second run of the game for the Cougars with an RBI sacrifice fly. Jewett would add another for the Cougars in the sixth inning, by way of a solo homerun, which was her third homerun of the season, and second of the road trip.
Ung's dominant performance is the improves her record to 13-6 on the season, with an ERA of 2.39. Her complete game shutout is her sixth complete game shutout of the season.
Game Two: Azusa Pacific 12, Notre Dame de Namur 3 (5 innings)
In the second game of the day, Azusa Pacific's offense put together a pair of big innings, while a trio of Cougar pitchers kept the game away from the Argonauts.
The Cougars first big inning came in the top of the second, as Azusa Pacific scored seven runs on seven hits. By the time Notre Dame de Namur was able to get an out in the second inning, the Cougars already had four hits and two runs scored. Following two consecutive Azusa Pacific hitters getting out, the Cougars put together a two-out rally to score five more runs in the inning.
The Argonauts cut the lead down to 7-2 in the bottom of the third, as they scored two runs off of three hits.
The Cougars would take all momentum back in the top of the fourth, as Azusa Pacific brought five runs across the plate to make the score 12-2. In the bottom of the fifth, Notre Dame de Namur was only able to score one run, which put into effect the mercy rule, which means the game ends if a team trails by eight or more runs after the fifth inning.
Every Cougar who had at least two at-bats in the game had a hit, including four Cougars with two hits. Freshman
Ashley Kincaid led the Cougar offense with a 2-for-3 game, as she had three RBIs and scored two runs. Junior
Emily Moran and senior
Melanie Abzun also had solid performances, as each player had two RBIs in the game.
Following her one-hit, complete game shutout victory in game one of the day, Ung also started game two. Ung threw a scoreless first inning, before senior
Racqual Espinoza threw two innings of relief in the second and third innings. Senior
Megan Mejia picked up the win, as she closed out the game with two scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth. With the win, Mejia improved to 4-1 on the season.
Up Next: The Cougars record is now 30-14 overall, with a 21-8 PacWest record. With the 10 games in five days portion of the schedule coming to a close, Azusa Pacific will get a bit of a break. The Cougars next games will be a doubleheader on Saturday, April 27, when they travel to Concordia.
