Cougars Survive First-Round Scare

No. 4-seeded Azusa Pacific outlasted No. 5-seed Academy of Art in a 76-67 overtime victory to advance to Friday's PacWest Tournament semifinals against regular-season champion Point Loma

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- A goaltending call as time expired in regulation delayed Azusa Pacific from its eventual PacWest Tournament first-round win over Academy of Art, but the Cougars pulled away in the extra period for a 76-67 win Thursday afternoon.

The No. 4-seeded Cougars move on to a semifinal matchup with No. 1-seeded PacWest regular-season champion Point Loma.

With Azusa Pacific leading, 63-62, Victor Ruiz de Carranza missed the front end of a one-and-one with 12.6 seconds remaining, and Jake Spurgeon went to the other end after a foul to hit a pair of free throws with 11.3 seconds left in regulation for a 65-62 lead. As the final seconds ticked away, Academy of Art's Stefan Milivojevic put up a long three-point attempt which came up short of the basket entirely, but Ruiz de Carranza grabbed the rebound and dribbled out to the corner for one more three-point attempt just before time expired.

Ruiz de Carranza's attempt also appeared to be coming up short, but Selom Mawugbe tipped it away from the basket and was whistled for goaltending, giving Academy of Art the game-tying basket to force overtime.

Mawugbe scored five points in overtime, leading the Cougars to an 11-2 margin in the extra five-minute frame to pull away for the nine-point win. He finished with a career-high 25 points, seven rebounds, and six blocks to lead Azusa Pacific, which improved to 20-10 overall while Academy of Art finished the season 11-17 overall.

What's Next: Azusa Pacific takes on PacWest regular-season champion Point Loma, which swept the season series over the Cougars and earned the No. 1-seed and first-round bye in the six-team conference tournament.

How It Happened: Neither team led by more than six points in regulation, with Academy of Art leading throughout most of the first half to take a 32-30 halftime lead. Azusa Pacific answered with five straight points in the first minute of the second half, and the Urban Knights only led once more the rest of the way.

The Cougars dominated the extra period, pulling down eight rebounds to just one for Academy of Art while holding the Urban Knights without an overtime point until less than a minute remained.

Turning Point: After Academy of Art took its only lead after halftime, 47-46, on a Cole Morgan jumper with 10:49 left in regulation, Jake Spurgeon answered with a three-pointer just 18 seconds later. That sparked a 9-2 run, which Mawugbe finished with the first of back-to-back dunks. The first slam gave the Cougars a 55-49 edge with 7:39 to play, and the next came just under the seven-minute mark to answer a Milivojevic trey for a 57-52 lead. Mawugbe twice made layups in the final five minutes, which pushed the lead back to six points before Academy of Art closed the gap to one, 63-62, with just under a minute to play.

Azusa Pacific Standouts: Mawugbe scored 18 of his game-high 25 points after halftime, his second 20-point performance against Academy of Art in the last week. His six-block performance pushed his school-record season total past the century mark to 104 blocks on the year. Jake Spurgeon continued his late-season surge with 13 points, recording double figures for the ninth time in the past 12 games, and Gerritt Beetstra came off the bench to score 13 points including three makes from three-point range. Noah Bundrant registered three steals in his return to the lineup after a three-game absence, and Darien McClain tallied a game-high seven assists to go with nine points, and three steals.

Academy of Art Standouts: Andrija Blatancic posted a 17-point, 14-rebound double-double to lead the Urban Knights in both categories, and three others reached double figures as Cole Morgan, Victor Ruiz de Carranza, and Stefan Milivojevic scored 11 points apiece.

By The Numbers: Two of Mawugbe's top three individual scoring performances have come against Academy of Art, and his previous career-high of 24 points was set earlier this year against the Cougars' semifinal opponent, Point Loma… Mawugbe has registered at least five blocks in nine games this season… Azusa Pacific was perfect from the free throw line in the first half and overtime, finishing the game at 80 percent (20-for-25) from the line… Academy of Art snapped the Cougars' eight-game streak of a positive rebounding margin, edging the Cougars 40-37 on the boards… The Urban Knights shot 40 percent (27-for-67) overall and 28 percent (7-for-25) on three-pointers, the 12th time this season Azusa Pacific has held an opponent below 30 percent from three-point range.
