TURLOCK, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific closed out the Tournament of Champions with a pair of wins on Saturday, as the Cougars finished the weekend 4-1. Azusa Pacific defeated Humboldt State 10-2 in game one, and then beat Central Washington 11-4 in the second game of the day.

Game One: Azusa Pacific 10, Humboldt State 2 (5 Innings)

Azusa Pacific opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, as senior
Melanie Abzun singled home senior
Cayla Broussard to take a quick 1-0 lead. The Cougars added three more runs in the top of the second to push their lead up to 4-0, as junior
Jenna Gorman and Broussard each had RBI singles, and freshman
Olivia Smith laid down a sacrifice bunt with one out in the inning.

Humboldt State would get on the board in the bottom of the second, as the Jacks scored two runs in the inning to cut the Cougar lead down to 4-2. The momentum would not stay with Humboldt State for long, as the Cougars scored six runs over the next two innings.

Azusa Pacific would score one run in the top of the third inning, as sophomore
Amanda Woods had an RBI single with no outs in the inning. While the Jacks limited the damage to just one run in the third inning, the Cougars exploded for five runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Following three straight singles for the Cougars to start the fourth inning, Abzun came to the plate with the bases loaded. With one swing of the bat, Abzun cleared the bases with a grand slam to center field that grew Azusa Pacific's lead to 9-2. It was Abzun's third homerun of the season. Emily Moran singled home Woods to make it 10-2, Cougars.

Eight Cougars had at least one hit in the game, including five players with multiple hits. Abzun finished 3-for-4 in the game, with a grand slam, a double, and two runs scored. Broussard, Smith, Woods and Moran each had two hits in the game.

Senior
Racqual Espinoza pitched all five innings for the Cougars, as she allowed just three hits and two earned runs, while improving to 7-6 on the year.

Game Two: Azusa Pacific 11, Central Washington 4

The Cougar offense kept rolling in game two, as Azusa Pacific scored 11 runs on 15 hits. Though the Cougars were held scoreless in the bottom of the first, Azusa Pacific scored in each of the five final innings.

In the second inning, freshman
Ashley Kincaid had a two-RBI single that put the Cougars up 2-0. Central Washington cut the lead down to 2-1 in the top of the third, however, Azusa Pacific answered right back in the bottom half of the third with an RBI sacrifice bunt from freshman
Dani Burghardt, which gave the Cougars a 3-1 lead.

Azusa Pacific put up three runs in the bottom of the fourth, as sophomore
Becca Jewett led off the inning with a solo homerun to left field. Moran followed Jewett's solo shot with a single, and Moran came around to score when Gorman drove her home with an RBI double with still no outs. The third run of the inning was scored when Fraijo drove in Kincaid with an RBI fielder's choice.

While Central Washington put up three runs in the top of the fifth, which cut the Cougars' lead down to 6-4, Azusa Pacific scored a run in the bottom half of the fifth to go up 7-4. The lone run in the fifth inning for the Cougars came by way of a Moran RBI double.

Azusa Pacific scored four runs in the sixth inning, which put the game out of reach for Central Washington. The Cougars scored two runs off of a two-RBI triple from Burghardt, a run off of an error by Central Washington, and an RBI single by Moran.

In the game, Jewett and Moran each finished with three hits in the game. Kincaid, Woods and Fraijo also turned in multi-hit games, as each player finished with two hits. Burghardt led Azusa Pacific with three RBIs. Junior
Kat Ung threw a complete game for the Cougars, as she struck out eight batters and improved to 7-6 on the season.

Up Next: Following its 4-1 weekend, Azusa Pacific is now 17-13 overall. The Cougars will have a week off, as they prepare for a road contest at rival Biola. Azusa Pacific and Biola will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 6, starting at 4:00 p.m.
