AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific finished off a four-game sweep of the Chaminade Silverswords on Thursday, as the Cougars won 11-0 (5 innings) in game one, and 1-0 in game two. Azusa Pacific did not surrender a run in the series with Chaminade.
Game One: Azusa Pacific 11, Chaminade 0 (5 Innings)
Â
The Cougar offense jumped out to a quick start in game one, as Azusa Pacific scored four runs in the bottom of the first, and six runs in the bottom of the second inning. Senior
Racqual Espinoza got the day started for Azusa Pacific, as she had an RBI single in the bottom of the first that drove home senior
Cayla Broussard. A few batters later, with runners on first and second, sophomore
Amanda Woods hit a two-RBI triple to center field, to make the score 3-0 Cougars. Woods crossed the plate just one batter later, when freshman
Dani Burghardt hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
Â
In the bottom of the second, Azusa Pacific scored six runs off of just three hits, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Burghardt.
Â
Burghardt and Woods led the way for the Cougars, as they each had three RBIs in the game. Espinoza, senior
Melanie Abzun, and freshman
Olivia Smith each finished with one RBI. Abzun and Espinoza each drew two walks.
Â
Two Azusa Pacific pitchers combined for the five inning shutout, as Espinoza started the game and threw two innings, striking out a batter and allowing just one hit. Senior
Megan Mejia came on in relief for Espinoza in the top of the third, as she claimed the win for her three scoreless innings. Mejia is now 2-0 on the season.
Â
Game Two: Azusa Pacific 1, Chaminade 0
Â
Despite being held scoreless through the first six innings, it was the performance of junior pitcher
Kat Ung who kept the Cougars in the game. Ung threw a complete game shutout, as she went seven innings, surrendering just three hits and striking out six batters, while not allowing a walk in the game. With the win, Ung improved her season record to 4-4.
Â
Offensively, the Cougars threatened on a few occasions, including bases loaded situations in both the bottom of the fourth, and the bottom of the fifth. However, Chaminade pitcher Madelyn Stockslager held the Cougars scoreless in both innings. In total, Azusa Pacific left nine runners on base in game two. The 0-0 tie would finally be broken by the Cougars, and it came in a big way.
Â
With one out in the bottom of the sixth, junior
Daniella Toschi came to the plate for the Cougars. Toschi fouled off the first pitch she saw from Stockslager, and then she laid off on two consecutive balls. With a 2-1 count, Toschi saw a pitch she liked, and she launched a deep fly ball down the left field for a solo homerun that gave the Cougars a late 1-0 lead. The homerun was Toschi's second on the season. Ung closed the game out in the top half of the seventh inning, securing the series sweep.
Â
Broussard stole a base in the game, which is the fifth consecutive game that she has safely stolen a base. She now has 12 stolen bases on the season, which is tied for second most in the PacWest.
Â
Up Next: Azusa Pacific is now 11-9 overall, and 8-4 in PacWest play. The Cougars will now welcome Hawai'i Hilo for a four-game series, with a doubleheader on Friday, March 22, starting at 4 p.m., and a second doubleheader on Saturday, March 23, beginning at noon. Â
