Cougars Clinch PacWest Crown

For the third time in four years, Azusa Pacific is the PacWest regular season champion, as the Cougars knocked off Academy of Art, 77-47

For the third time in four years, Azusa Pacific claimed the PacWest regular season championship, as the Cougars defeated Academy of Art by a final of 77-47. Azusa Pacific had won the PacWest title in 2015-16, 2017-18, and now 2018-19.  
 
With the PacWest regular season championship under their belt, the Cougars will be the top-seed at the PacWest Conference Tournament that starts next week at Dominican University, in San Rafael, California. Azusa Pacific's first game of the tournament will be a semifinal at 7:15 p.m. on March 8 against the winner of No. 4 Point Loma and No. 5 Fresno Pacific.
 
How It Happened: Azusa Pacific used an all-around performance to post the commanding win. The Cougars shot 46.3% (31-for-67) from the floor, while Academy of Art was 30% (18-for-60) overall. Of Azusa Pacific's 31 made field goals, the Cougars assisted on 25 of them. From beyond the arc, Azusa Pacific knocked down seven threes, and the Urban Knights made just three from deep. On the glass, Azusa Pacific outrebounded Academy of Art by a 50-32 margin. Defensively, Azusa Pacific was able to force 15 turnovers, scoring 18 points off of turnovers, while Academy of Art turned the Cougars over 11 times, scoring just four points off of turnovers.
 
Turning Point: The Cougars took control of the game from the outset, as Azusa Pacific held a 25-4 lead after the first quarter of play. Azusa Pacific went on a 13-0 run to begin the game, as the Urban Knights scored their first points of the game on a made free throw with 5:39 left in the first quarter. The Cougars maintained momentum in the second quarter, as they extended the lead to 44-11 at halftime. Academy of Art scored just nine points in both the second and third quarter.
 
Azusa Pacific Standouts: Junior Savanna Hanson posted a near triple-double in the game, as she finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists, while also adding a block. The Cougars were led in scoring by sophomore Laura Pranger, who scored 17 points. Pranger also had seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal. Two other Cougars also scored in double figures, as junior Daylee Hanson had 11 points to go along with a game-high six steals, and junior Rachel Bozlee scored 10 points.
 
Academy of Art Standouts: Two Urban Knights scored in double-figures, as Lily Perkins scored a game-high 23 points, and Ines Medina scored 12 points. Megan Jefferson grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
 
Up Next: With the win, Azusa Pacific improved to 23-4 overall, and 20-1 in conference play. The PacWest Champion Cougars will close out the 2019 regular season on Saturday, March 2, when Azusa Pacific will welcome Dominican for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off. The contest will be the final time that seniors Meg Van Rijn and Samantha Huddleston take the court in the Felix Event Center. Van Rijn and Huddleston will be honored with an on-court ceremony post-game.
